Part of our difficulty results from the English language using the word “love” to refer to so many different things. Were we to use the Greek “agape” for “Christian love,” some of these issues would be easier to resolve.

For example, when Jesus refers to “love thy neighbor,” it would be clear that that was different from having sex with dogs.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:2-3
