Large Russian Volunteer Movement Rescuing 100s of Beautiful Old Wooden Churches in North

Patriarch Kirill commends and thanks the volunteers for their selfless service.

The Common Cause Project is a collection of volunteers who are dedicated to preserving the Russian spiritual tradition in the North of Russia by means of restoring and renovating wooden churches in Russia’s North, many of which have fallen into disrepair or ruin due to decades of enforced neglect or outright attack under communism.

Since 2006, however, stalwart volunteers each year trek into the inaccessible North in order to restore and save these spiritual treasures from destruction. Often when they are finished with the renovations, they turn the temples over to local villagers and inhabitants in order that they might continue to complete the restoration and enjoy the resumption of Divine Services in the churches.

On 4 April, representatives from Common Cause met with Patriarch Kirill of All Russia at Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Several of the volunteers received certificates from the Patriarch for their service in preserving the churches.

Leaders of expeditions presented their reports, and popular artist Dmitry Pevtsov also performed. A “Memory Eternal” was sang for those who had been involved in the project and have subsequently departed this life.

According to the project website, 360 churches have been investigated and 168 saved by the group, all through volunteer efforts.

The assembled volunteers were also addressed by Patriarch Kirill, who said in part,

What you do is not only of great importance for the preservation of Russia's cultural heritage, but also — I would like to emphasize once again-of spiritual and educational significance. For a modern person, especially a resident of a megalopolis, accustomed to the amenities and conditions of the urban environment, it is sometimes very difficult to go beyond the comfort zone and look at God's creation with different eyes. It is gratifying that the project " Common Cause. Revival of wooden churches of the North " helps people to join the amazing beauty of the harsh northern nature, touch Orthodox shrines and, we hope, through this touch to gain faith in God — for those who do not have this faith...I express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you and invoke God's blessing on you and on your selfless efforts to preserve the great heritage of the Russian North. God bless you all, and remember, my dear ones, that you are doing a very important, I would say — great work, saving for everyone who takes part in this work. Thank you very much!

As the USA and its adherents spiral into degenerate apostasy, is reassuring to know that Christianity will survive elsewhere.

Poland also has a lot of fantastic old wooden churches.

They also used to have wooden synagogues before the Nazis pretty much burned them all down.

Church attendance in the US is 30%. In Russia its 7%.
