There was recently a worldwide "Scouts" Jamboree in Korea, and "Scouts" from all over the world attended.

This is a picture of the people arriving in country to attend:

What is wrong with this picture? And then, they showed a picture of all the tents:

And this:

When you read the story, it talks about how it was hot, there wasn't enough water, etc. etc. etc. and I had to think-these aren't the Boy Scouts I was in. These "scouts" seem utterly helpless.

And the pictures seem to convey a bigger issue about what the "scouts" are now, and what their purpose is.

Because it seems less to "Be Prepared" with and more to be in pink tents, bringing stuffed animals, instead of water, food, and non-pink shelter.

I am in no way anti-woman in this respect, but I believe it is important for young boys to be in an environment that girls are not part of. Boys and girls develop differently, and develop at different rates.

It was my experience as a 12-14 year old boy in Boy Scouts, that if there had been girls there, it would have changed the entire dynamic. There would be romance, there would be guys (including me) to whom impressing the girls would have been far, far more important than doing what I should have been focusing on, learning first aid, how to build fires correctly, how to set up a tent.

I would have been paying attention to the girls, what they were doing, if they were noticing me, that kind of thing.

I am sure there are women who would say “That isn’t the fault of the girls, that is your fault!” and there is some truth in that, but on the other hand, I might say it is the fault of biology.

I think all guys, if they are truthful, will recognize what I am driving at.

For this reason, I was, and am dead set against having females in combat billets or aboard warships. But that ship has literally sailed, and we aren’t going back. We will find the folly of that in the next war where there is going to be hand to hand combat with a foe who is on par with us. But that is another issue.

Having boys be able to develop at the critical ages that one could be a Boy scout (I recall you had to be 12 years old, but I could be wrong) was what added value to Boy Scouts and help boys become men.

That raison d’être no longer exists. For all it is worth now, it looks like a hunting ground for homosexual pedophiles or a hook up environment for horny teenagers.

In Trail Life, leaders undergo a criminal background check, youth protection training repeated every two years and strict two-deep leadership. We are never allowed to be alone with a boy.

Any communication must include his parents or another adult. Phone, e-mail etc.

Any emails sent through our email portal automatically copies the parents.

Our leaders are always looking out for each other to prevent any possibility of a situation.

Any adult who is at a meeting or event and is not a registered adult is not considered any part of two-deep. If he’s engaging with the youth, there are two registered adult with him.

Churches and other organizations are beginning to turn to Trail Life for guidance in their own youth protection methods.

I agree with that. Boys, when faced with that at the age where they are still figuring out how to stand on their own feet and prepare them to be men, will in many cases withdraw to ground that feels more solid to them.

I knew the Scouts has fallen hard when a Eagle Scout said he didn’t have to actually perform an event to obtain his Eagle Scout rating, just plan it and tell a few adults what he would do if he actually were to do it. All his badges were that way; participation trophies, no actual accomplishments.

Many many cases of abuse happened before gay scout leaders were permitted.

I don’t think gay men should be scout leaders, but at least if one is open, you know what to watch out for.

Child abusers go where they can find victims. They look for the vulnerable lonely children.

They start by filling unmet emotional needs, they convince the child they love him.

The outgoing, charismatic, charming ones, the ones who don’t set off alarms, can get away with it for decades.

One of the major advantages of Scouting was that it WAS hard. If you were going to go for a hiking merit badge, you had to DO something, like hike a 5 mile, 10 mile, and 20 mile hike (IIRC)

If you were going for the Order of The Arrow, you had to spend several nights in the woods with no more than a pocket knife or something like that.

If you were going for your Eagle, like you said, you had to do a comprehensive project of some kind, like building a permanent bridge across a creek on a hiking path, restoring an area in some town square that was dilapadated, or starting up some kind of high level project. (I was never an Eagle Scout, but I saw what they went through when going for it, and it wasn’t easy, took months, or even a year to plan and do it.

It was substantial.

This “particpation trophy” crap sounds like so much of what we see in society today.
