My vast experience with large homeschooling families proves this to be completely untrue. Our friends just had their twelfth, he is a self employed carpenter working out of his basement. They do not earn way above average, they are typical of the very large families I know, and they simply make different choices on what to spend their money on. It can be done, but it takes sacrifice and courage and faith.
