Yes, there were great hymns. But there were also dull and unpopular ones as well, just as there is great praise music being created today, even though you might not be exposed to it. Try Matt Redman, he is one of my favorite writers and singers; also I defy anyone to listen to "Before the Throne of God above" by Vikki Cook (copyright 1997) without getting the chills.
Matthew 26:30 says that Jesus and His disciples sang a hymn before they went out to Gethsemane. Do you ever think that the Christians of about 300 A.D ever said to themselves, "The music today isn't like what it was in Jesus' time. Just give my Jesus' old fashioned songbook, it's good enough of me."
