Flo Certified as Humanist Counselor Humanists of Utah now has two certified Humanists Counselors. Florien Wineriter's application was approved by the Division of Humanist Counseling, AHA, during the closing session of the Humanists Counselor Summer Institute held in Columbia, Maryland August 16-18. Flo attended the institute where he received information on conducting Humanist rites of passage such as weddings, life celebrations, and funerals. Following private interviews with two officials of Division of Counseling, Flo was one of three new counselors certified during closing ceremonies of the Summer Institute.

Humanist Counselors, AHA, are entitled to the rights and priveleges granted to ministers, priests, rabbis and other ordained clergy. Their services are available to all who desire the various rites of passage, but who don't want such ceremonies peformed by ministers of supernatural religions. Humanist counselors also provide pastoral counseling in time of crisis, but if specialized professional help is needed they refer people to appropriate sources.

Ed Wilson has been a Humanist Counselor since the Division was established. In 1949, after three years as Minister of the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City, Ed Wilson moved to Ohio where he became Executive Director of the American Humanist Association, serving until age 65. His appointment followed years of editing Humanist publications: Managing Editor, The New Humanist (1928-1938) and The Humanist Bulleting (1938-1941), and Founding Editor, The Humanist (1941 - 1963). Ed was one of the four editors of A Humanist Manifesto (1933) and with Lester Mondale, half-brother of Walter Mondale, is one of the two survivors of the 34 singers of the document.
