BOSTON GLOBE AWARDED PULITZER GOLD FOR CLERGY SEXUAL ABUSE

The Boston Globe has won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for meritorious public service for its coverage of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests, it was announced yesterday.

The Pulitzer board cited the Globe's ''courageous, comprehensive coverage,'' which ''pierced secrecy, stirred local, national, and international reaction, and produced changes'' in the church.

''We're thrilled to be given this recognition, which is the highest distinction a newspaper can receive,'' said the Globe's publisher, Richard Gilman. ''The award validates our belief that the Globe's work on this story, and stories like it, is the ultimate public service that we can provide to the community.''

''I'm really proud of what the paper has been able to accomplish,'' said the Globe's editor, Martin Baron. ''There was just a real determination to tell the whole truth, not just a piece of it, not just a slice.''

Speaking before a packed newsroom, Baron said: ''You made history this past year. And you made the world a better and safer, and more humane place.''

Starting in January 2002 with a Globe Spotlight series, Globe reporters revealed a widespread pattern of sexual abuse by priests that was covered up by the Archdiocese of Boston. The scandal culminated with the resignation of Cardinal Bernard F. Law in December.

I can't recall....did the House managers get any kind of award for identifying clinton's sexual assaults and taking the vast amount of information to the senate.......a senate that refused to look at the evidence or allow witnesses at the trial?

I guess I do remember.

Excellent point!! Oh, and by the way, what is the status of Clinton's book? Didn't he sign a "hefty" deal with some publishing company? As for Hillary's book, Simon and Schuster are contemplating taking her to court.

I'm not sure about the progress of the pervert's book.....I am, however, curious who will be writing it.

Maybe Dershowitz......he's pretty adept at making false accusations/statements (read that lying) and trying to snow his audience.

"As for Hillary's book, Simon and Schuster are contemplating taking her to court."

Ahhhhh......Simon and Schuster.....enough people to allow the PIAPS to claim the entire matter is nothing more than a conspiracy against her. :)

The Pulitzers are a joke. Old Joseph Pulitzer would be rolling in his grave if he saw this - and what his flagship newspaper has become.

At this point, we can thank the Pulitzer family for some very important paintings at the Saint Louis Art Museum, but not much else.

Great headline. Sounds like they won the award for comitting the abuses, not reporting on them.

And you made the world a better and safer, and more humane place.

It's not any safer for the poor molesting priests that they outed...

Priests everywhere now find it more difficult to find little boys to molest. They can now rely only on the most devout Catholic parents to supply them with little boys.

The Boston Glode probably didn't even get the Pope's approval for the articles, either!!!

Award, my foot!
