You had to bring that up didn't you? The Byzantine Empire was in decline years before that. The Muslims were barely driven back from the gates of Constantinople not even a century after Muhammed's death.

Well it was nice of the West to help out instead of also attacking the Empire at the same time (and that was beack when their was no Cath/Orth division).
