Help needed to fight smoking bans
Posted on 01/19/2005 2:24:31 PM PST by Da Bilge Troll
My local city government (St. Peters, MO) is making noises about banning smoking from bars. Does anyone have or know of anyone or group who has sucessfully stopped such a law and might be able to provide help and advice?

there is a similar group in my home town of salt lake city utah. every year they get more and more extreme anti-smoking laws passed. this year they are pushing to have it banned in bars. I know of no way to stop them or of anyone who has.

Our city council just banned smoking in bars (no restaurants attached) in my small town. The bar owners are up in arms over it. One suggestion was, that the bar go "private". Don't know if they'll allow that though.

As a private tobacco appreciation club, I would say they could win on appeal any attempt to out law them.

The are going to do what they want to do no matter how many fight against the smoking ban. Take Maine for instance...................please..........

They banned smoking in all indoor facilities and raised the age from 18 to 19 in Suffolk County in New York. I don't see a stop to these bans anywhere.

well I read today that if Freddt Ferrer gets in as mayor in NYC he won't do anything about the smoking ban. Figures.
I was just in an interesting debate on this topic on a sports-car forum I post on. I took on all comers, arguing against smoking bans and fought them to a bloody draw. Unfortunately, you would have to register there to read it, but it is here if you are interested:

Uh, aren't they already private? I mean, doesn't some private individual(s) own the bars, and not the government.
I don't smoke, but I am totally against these laws, for this reason alone.

I think what they mean by going private is "not open to the public". Sort of like a club with a membership (of smokers only).

All bars are already "not open to the public" or rather, they should be. As a private establishment, they should have the right to exclude anyone for any reason they want. That's the whole idea of private. Likewise, the 'public' are not forced to enter a 'private' establishment. We retain the right to not enter any private establish.
I hate smoking bans in that they try to make public, those places that are actually private. The bar/restaurant, etc.
Next they'll (the government) be creating smoking bans in homes, and tell it's for the children/aged/etc.

Exactly!! We didn't even get to vote on this one...the city council just passed it on their own without the bar owners input or nothing. There is already a law out here that bans smoking in bars attached to restaurants, AND you have to be something like 12 feet away from the entrance of a restaurant to smoke outside...so people who don't smoke CAN go there, but no, they have to complain about the stand alone bars too. It'll be interesting so see how or if they can fight this, because, as you say, the next thing they will try is to ban it in our homes.

We have no such bans yet, though they've been hinted at. I don't smoke anymore, I don't even visit the bars anymore, but I might, just to pick a fight, should these bans ever come to my town.

The smoking ban in NY is state wide. I don't understand, I thought liberals usually had sympathy for the addicted.
