Republicans Should Make Education A Really Big Issue
Sept 8, 2010 | Bruce Deitrick Price

Posted on 09/08/2010 8:01:57 PM PDT by BruceDeitrickPrice

A NOTE TO THE PARTY BOSSES:

Tens of millions of parents have been dragged into the Education Wars, the Reading Wars, the Math Wars, etc. They are profoundly sick of it. They are angry. They want change and improvement.

The Republican Party has got to step up and hit this easy pitch. The Tea Party as well.

Almost every American has watched Jay Leno go Jaywalking, and probably exclaimed the same words: “These people are voters but they don’t know anything. This isn’t acceptable.”

The Republican Party should see the huge political leverage in pushing common-sense reform. Give the people what they want: a return to sane schools that emphasize reading, writing, arithmetic and geography, to be followed by history, science, literature and the arts. These are the eight points of light every good school invariably follows.

Conversely, explain that the schemes pushed by the Education Establishment are often counterproductive and lead to dumbing-down. The most charitable thing we can say about our self-proclaimed experts is that they are clumsy bureaucrats. The public no longer likes them or trusts them.

So we have two urgent pieces of business here: saving the country from stupid education policy; and gaining political advantage by doing good.

Everybody knows it’s liberals who are screwing up education. Make them defend their 50 million functional illiterates, and probably an even greater number who can’t do simple arithmetic without a calculator.

I'd say that no specifics are required for the campaign. If the public blames bad schools on the people who created them, that's great. Then they have one more reason to vote against Democrats.

I write about the details all the time, but the details can overwhelm people. I believe that what people want to hear is very simple: that you'll make public schools recapture the safety and efficiency they traditionally had.

I agree, for 2012. For 2010, the focus has to be squarely on the deficit, the spending, the jobs, and Obamacare.

So, you're proposing to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic. Lovely.

Fact is, there is no proper constitutional jurisdiction for the national government when it comes to education.

The ONLY education platform needs to be the UNFULFILLED Promise of Reagan to END the Dept of Education and Privatize it all.

I am a proud member of Citizens United for the Separation of SCHOOL and State.

Bruce, how is it that you repeatedly come to such a ridiculous conclusion? This isn’t the first time you have posted such drivel.

Government schools **are** by definition socialist-funded, godless, compulsory, and government owned and run. How is it possible to reform godlessness, socialism, compulsion, and government ownership and management?

Solution: Return all education issues to the states, and form there work toward complete separation of school and state!

Liberals will claim they cover it and to a degree they do!

What is WRONG with it is the Math is dumbed down, the reading is touchy feely, and to sum it up it's dumbed down stuff with LOW STANDARDS. It's all about FUN and GAMES. Learning must be “entertaining”. Well the truth is some learning can be “fun” but not all.

The bigger issue is the CONTENT. Our history has been rewritten. Instead of having Algebra in middle school, it's now in high school - according to the Race to the Top folks. I can honestly say, what I had to learn in Junior High is taught in a watered down version in today's high school.

We keep dumbing kids down, teaching them to hate their country and worst of all - not to have KNOWLEDGE. You should just know where to “get the knowledge” and have GROUP THINK. The individual is disappearing but the SELF ESTEEM factor is at an all time high. Empty, headed, touchy, feely kids is what is coming out of high school and college. It's biting us when compared to other countries. U.S. education is not so great.

The U.S. has a bleak future if this is not straightened our properly. CLOSE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, and leave it to parents as to where they want their kids to go. Even in Belgium the MONEY follows the kid. It keeps education competitive.

Obama, we can't all use BRAWN to make a living, such as BUILIDNG ROADS and BRIDGES and other monkey like jobs. These occupations do NOT make a country prosperous. They are necessary but people do have some cerebral talent. Obama has everything backwards.

Well Race to the Top, put the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT in charge of YOUR STATE STANDARDS. Stupid and dumb people want it. When you have such idiotic people, it’s tough to get them thinking straight when they are so terribly dumbed down.

Stop making education mandatory. Kick out kids that don’t want to learn.

Then hire more police officers.

Simple commercial.

“Why is Johnny a metrosexual wussy?”

Because the Liberals won’t let Johnny play dodgeball in the schoolyard. They say it will drive up insurance rates. They say it isn’t fair to children who are sports challenged.”

This November, toss a dodgeball at the Liberals and tell them the boys are back in town.

Vote Conservative, because Liberals are turning your little boys into Girliemen.

Sure. Let's ignore the elephant in the room of staggering debt and unemployment to emphasize education, a typical home turf of Democrats who own the teachers unions and school boards.

Just dumn.

If you have kids in Public Schools you need to be warned about Math Programs coming out of the University of Chicago (go figure). They were using Everyday Mathematics in my son's school and its as bad as the lady in the video says. 2nd grade math was too difficult for I or my wife to be much help to him during homework. This year, Thank God, they dumped it, for something else.

wintertime is hard to please. That’s okay.

Here’s my take. I want to hang on to some optimism, to try to find the path(s) that might lead to success.

So, one thing we can certainly do is help the public understand where all the “socialist-funded, godless, compulsory” problems came from. Just set the record straight.

It amazes me how many people will exonerate the Education Establishment, and blame everything on parents, kids, TV, etc. This is due to successful propaganda. So I’m suggesting what seems to me obvious: let’s start insisting on the truth.

Yep. But why stop there? All institutions of higher learning should be private as well.
