Hello, just saw this posting after doing a search on Bailyn. I'm arguing with someone who stated that the founding fathers believed that liberty did not exist outside of gov't. They then cited a portion or Bailyn's work in order to support her claim. Now, based on the clip I don't know if she's misinterpretting his work or if that's what he's putting forth. But since I never read the book I was looking for input.

The man behinde the Eagle barer is my Great Great Grandfather, Christopher Darius Gorman he enlisted in the Eighth regiment, Wisconsin volunteer infantry called the Eagle regiment in 1861 and played the fife. He served with them until June 6, 1864, when he was shot through the left shoulder. He then went to the hospital and was discharged from there May 26, 1865. I enlarged the photo of the face and he has a mole beside his nose that matches an about 1930 picture of him.
