The South could only have won by breaking the will of the North to continue the war.
No matter how many battles the South won until the North was willing to call it quits there was no chance of a Southern military victory over the North. The South didn't want to conquer the North anyway, they just wanted to be let go.

The South could only have won by breaking the will of the North to continue the war. Exactly, that's what a guerilla war would have done, just like in Vietnam. But I read Lee was against fighting it that way. Churchill called him one of the last of the old-time, conventional generals.
