One of the observers was Admiral Thomas C. Hart, commander of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet, who would have a clear view of the destruction of his fleet base. He was disgusted at the absence of Army fighter protection, the very protection he had assumed MacArthur's air force would provide.

Revetments and [foxholes] not prepared. Guns jammed. No one trained. Lackluster attitudes, general complacency.

What's missing is McClintock taking MacArthur out into the middle of the street for the classic scene,

"I know, I know. I'll use proper judgment. I haven't lost my temper in forty years, but pilgrim you could've gotten somebody killed today and somebody oughta belt you in the mouth, but I won't. I won't. The hell I won't!"

Almost immediately after World War II, congressional investigations broke the secret that the United States had been reading Japanese diplomatic codes before the outbreak of hostilities. Through these "MAGIC" decrypts, the U.S. government had definite knowledge on the night before 7 December 1941 of Japan's intentions to break diplomatic relations. For several weeks before, the decrypts also had contained strong hints that Japan was preparing to initiate hostilities.

Conspiracy theorists have mined the MAGIC decrypts for all they are worth. But while they show that Washington had strong indications of Japan's intentions to strike, they contain not a hint of where that strike might come.

I went to Naples on five different cruises...1981-82, 82-83 with the Nimitz, 86-87 and 88-89 with the Kennedy, and the last in 1994-95 on the Ike (all winter deployments). Things changed a lot after the USO was bombed. Most of the bars and other "fun" places around fleet landing disappeared. It was almost unrecognizable in 1994. I did see the Camp Fire Girls, and Humpty Dumpty! The legend had it that Humpty Dumpty was there plying her trade when the Nazis were there.
