Evening Victoria. Praying that Kerry doesn't win.

Hi Sam, with God's help, Kerry won't win.

We're in for a world of hurt if he wins. ;-(

On second thought, I'll stick with the Macon, since I clearly know more than whoever put up the photo on that site.

I thought the text under the pic titled K-ship was in itself misleading. We find that a lot while putting together threads. However, since this isn't our "day job" we rarely have time to do complete corrections and often don't want to change something someone else has authored. We generally know it will be worked out on the thread or not take too much away from the story.

Either way we appreciate your insight on this and other subjects. It's part of how we all learn around here.

In fact, we count on it.:-)

U-134

Save the blimp base: From this Naval air station airships hunted U-boats in the Florida Keys.

Most of them were K-type airships, powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp engines, which gave them a top speed of 77 mph. Their envelopes were three-ply cotton bags impregnated with rubber or synthetic neoprene. The interior was coated with paraffin to make it leakproof. Most of the K-ships were 252 feet long and held as much as 456,000 cubic feet of helium. But when deflated, the five-ton envelope could fit into a shipping box 12 feet long, six feet high, and six feet wide.

In a sound bite played multiple times today by Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, an ABC television interviewer asks Senator John Kerry in 1994 whether it would be worth losing American lives in Bosnia.

Kerry replied (as he learned from pater Ricardo, Star-Spangled Mirror), "If it's under the UN auspice, yes; if it's just under the American flag, no."

This same senator (aka Schlemeil Chameleon) voted against the first Gulf War to remove Saddam from Kuwait, despite UN auspice.

So apparently the only thing that trumps the UN in Kerrifairy's red-sky world is the interest of a mass murderer.

Evening Phil Dragoo.

Nice shots of the blimp gondola and the AA armament on the U-Boat.

I only wish we could have "The Day Teresa Stood Still" and shut up. :-)

"If it's under the UN auspice, yes; if it's just under the American flag, no."

Why doesn't he just run for the UN Secretary General if he loves them so much?

In other news, the Edwards-class blimp Bovina bombed in an attempted docking on the Today show. Film at eleven--warning, graphic.

Truly interesting story. Similar thoughts have crossed my mind. Interesting we are talking 1929 here. Very nice shape to the airship.

Did some doodling twenty years ago on a hot air non-rigid, nuclear power, lots of heat available! I was thinking large, sort of cloud shaped, flat-ish on the bottom (lets it rest on a colder air layer, float like a cloud), optimized for low airspeed. Maybe a cubic mile. I seem to recollect that a 5 degree C temp difference is maybe all you would need. Sheet aluminum has it's applications in this composite and titanium world!

I have always seen myself as a hard core airship man. You, Sir, are certainly much my better in this!

You know, isn't it strange that almost no one cares who Hugo Eckener was?

I recall only enough to effectively Google. I usually check my gut responses before posting. I spent a good while trying to figure out if I could tell the difference between the Akron and Macon (not from photos on the web). I can't locate my copy of Jane's All the World's Airships at the moment.

I have certainly learned far more from the foxhole postings than the little bits of wisdom I have been able to add. I appreciate the work that you all do. As you noted, any imported errors tend to be self-correcting by the end of the thread.

My comments were not intended to be a criticism of your work or that of SAMWolf. If they came across that way, I apologize.

Nice post, Phil.

I think the next sport Kerry should take up is hot air ballooning. He wouldn't even need a heater unit - just take Terrraaazzah along.
