The FReeper Foxhole Honors our Veterans - November 11th, 2005
Department of Veterans Affairs and The Foxhole

Posted on 11/10/2005 9:22:39 PM PST by snippy_about_it

Lord,

Keep our Troops forever in Your care

Give them victory over the enemy...

Grant them a safe and swift return...

Bless those who mourn the lost.
.

FReepers from the Foxhole join in prayer
for all those serving their country at this time.

...................................................................................... ...........................................

U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

Veterans Day

To our veterans - Thank You

Veterans Day

A day set aside to honor our country's living veterans. At the Foxhole honoring veterans is a major part of our mission.

Whereas we will not forget those who died or our POW/MIAs, and those who are currently serving, today we specifically honor those men and women living among us who have served our country in times past, our living veterans.

Especially here at the Foxhole we are blessed to have veterans as part of our Foxhole family both as readers and contributors.

We would like to welcome all our veterans to the Foxhole on this very special day as we attempt to honor you and thank you for your service to our country. Freedom is not free and our debt to you and those gone before you can never fully be paid. May God richly bless you all. Welcome home and we will never forget.

It matters not where, when or how your served; here at home or in a foreign land, in the air, at sea or on land; in peacetime or in war, on the battefield or behind a desk; on supply lines; as an engineer, a mechanic, an infantrymen, a cook or medic. You chose to volunteer or fullfilled your duty by the draft and served America and we are forever grateful. Every job is important as they all support each other and the cause of freedom.

Some sacrifices are greater, yes, and some service more dangerous than others, yet all service is sacrifice by the troop and their family and we highly respect that service. Some gave all, all gave some.

Thank you all - from SAM and snippy

"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." --Thomas Paine, Founding Father

"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their Nation."
--George Washington

"Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."
--Dwight D. Eisenhower

Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

I'm not sure who to post this to, or how. But, my parish priest is a Vietnam veteran (he was a Chaplain in Vietnam), and he and his former soldiers in arms over the years have been trying to contact all the guys. There are a few they haven't been able to find yet, so I offered to post here in case anyone might have some helpful info.
My priest is Fr. Robert Falabella, and one guy in particular he is trying to find is Wally Nelson (real name Wallace? not sure). Their unit was the 5th Mechanized, 25th Infantry. Fr. Falabella was the Chaplain, and Nelson was the Chaplain's assistant. I think the last year Fr. was there was 1968. Fr. Falabella is the author of Vietnam Memoirs: A Passage to Sorrow.
Anyone with info or suggestions please post here or FReepmail me please.
Thanks!

I see the FR. name listed here with other members and their email addresses. Has the chaplain been in touch with some of these other members to see if they know Mr. Nelson?

That guy appears to have been there after Fr., but he has a link to the Bobcats main site and the battle descriptions match what Fr. told us (he came over and showed my family some of his slides from Vietnam).
This is a good start.
Thank you so much!!!

Some of the email addresses might be old but I'd give it a try, someone there might be able to help. Perhaps at their reunion if the Father can't go he could ask them to announce his search for this fellow at the reunion?

Good luck and be sure and thank the chaplain for his service to our country and our men.

Thank you very much.
Fr. is very busy and I really haven't had time to find out what lengths they have gone to (and what means) to find this guy. There is another guy he's looking for, but he'll get back to me with his real name (he could only remember a nickname this morning).

Looked at your Minister Sikorsky in the images above. Early 40s, very good physical condition. Serious fellow. Good eyes.

But he looks like he needs a good pair of boots! Those low cut shoes must have been full of sand.

Personally I am embarrassed about 1939. Both England and France had socialist governments since 1919. Goes to show.

The USA has had socialist governments since 1932. The fight goes on.

Your people never surrendered through some tough times. My respects.

Religious History
0354 Birth of St. Augustine of Hippo, greatest of the Early Latin Church Fathers. Of his many writings, two have endured: "Confessions" describes the circumstances leading to his conversion to the Christian faith, and "The City of God" was written as a Christian view of the sacking of Rome by the Visigoths in the year 410.
1564 Pius IV ordered his bishops and scholars to subscribe to "Professio Fidei," the Profession of the Tridentine Faith recently formulated at the Council of Trent (1545_63) as the new and final definition of the Roman Catholic faith.
1618 In the Dutch commune of Dordrecht, the Synod of Dort convened to discuss the Arminian controversy vexing the Reformed faith. In the end, about 200 Arminian (Remonstrant) ministers were deposed and fifteen were placed under arrest and later expelled from the country.
1804 Anglican missionary to Persia, Henry Martyn wrote in his journal: 'God and eternal things are my only pleasure.'
1962 The name of St. Joseph was added to the canon of the Roman Catholic mass. It constituted the first alteration made to this canon since the seventh century.

Police Respond to Burglary Call, Find Pot

Nov 12, 5:03 AM (ET)

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) - In retrospect, it probably wasn't such a good idea to call the police. Ronald Meyers summoned officers to his home in an upscale neighborhood Thursday morning, claiming that someone was trying to open his windows and that he could hear voices outside.

Responding officers found no burglar but asked if they could check inside, said Sgt. John Booth, a Palm Springs police spokesman. When Meyers, 59, let them in, officers allegedly found more than $100,000 worth of marijuana, he said.

The alleged stash included an 8-foot-tall pot plant, more plants growing in the garage and harvested marijuana - some packed into large closeable plastic bags - stuffed in large storage bins in a bedroom, Booth said.

Officers also allegedly found syringes, at least one methamphetamine pipe and other drug paraphernalia, he said.

Meyers was jailed for possession of marijuana for sale with bail set at $25,000, he said.

His neighbors said they were unaware of anything unusual going on inside the house, which sits near signs for the area's Neighborhood Watch Association.

Try A Little Kindness

Read:
Acts 10:1-8,44-46

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. —Ephesians 4:32

Bible In One Year: Acts 10-12

cover Cornelius, a first-century Roman military official, was assigned the task of maintaining order in turbulent Judea. Most Romans of that time believed in many gods—but not Cornelius. He feared the one true God, gave generously to the needy, and prayed regularly (Acts 10:2). Even though the Jewish people didn't accept him as one of their own, God recognized him as one of His. Cornelius agreed with God about what was good and he acted accordingly.

Because of Cornelius' kindness and prayers, God chose him for a special assignment and sent an angel to tell him what to do. The angel didn't explain why, and he didn't say what the outcome would be, but Cornelius followed the instructions. Because he obeyed, he and his household became the first Gentile believers to receive the Holy Spirit.

The example of Cornelius reminds us that God not only sees the good we do but is on the lookout for people who share His values. He wants to make them His partners in changing the world.

Today is World Kindness Day. If we follow the example of Cornelius, perhaps God will use our simple acts of kindness to change our world. —Julie Ackerman Link

Lord, compassion is part of Your character, and
kindness is one of the best ways to show the world what You are like.
May Your compassion fill my heart and spill over into the lives
of everyone I encounter. Amen.

Kindness is the oil that takes the friction out of life.
