Stumbled across something interesting on Google Earth.
It's a landing strip off the coast of South America. Due south of Lima, Peru. Lat/Long is 26° 17 36 S, 80° 05 51 W.
Doesn't appear to be inhabited at the time of the photo. There do seem to be a few tire marks at the E end of the runway. The runway is 1.2 miles long, which would handle something BIG, no?
Spur design is a little odd, maybe Soviet Bloc design/layout...?
Any ideas? I'm going to post this on another board that I go to from time to time.
I love a good mystery.
And I LOVE Google Earth.
The island is La Isla de San Felix and it belongs to Chile.
Awesome.
I also LOVE Free Republic, due to the vast sources of knowledge/resources available through my fellow FReepers.
Thanks!
De nada.
I love Googlesploring. A few years ago I found trees planted to form "1976" at 46 degrees north /87 degrees west (sorry I don't know how to do the little degree symbol) out in the sticks. I asked the question and now I know.
Take a look at 58 deg. 48 min. North by 1 deg 6 min. West. Lots of cool stuff there. :-)
Could you double check your coordinates?
Make that 58 deg. 48 min. North by 1 deg 6 min. East
Disregard post 10.
The original coordinates lead to part of Portsmouth. You can see many firgates, detsroyers, and RN carriers.
Portsmouth coordinates are:
50 48 13N, 1 06 32W
58 48N, 1 06W <- open sea b/w Scotland and Norway
Sorry, I goofed when typing which happens if I type too fast.
