Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., was one of the main authors of the bill and represents Camp Lejune on the North Carolina coast outside of Jacksonville. Jones feels the name change accurately describes the scope of the department and recognizes the Marines' efforts and contributions.
Now, in an effort to give them more recognition, the House approved a measure to rename the Department of the Navy to the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.

Frankly - this is stupid. The Marines are part of the Navy - leave it alone. Why go through all this trouble? How much is this going to cost to change the letter head, symbol, etc.? Seriously - LEAVE IT ALONE.

I agree or if you want to separate the marines at least say Department of the Marine Corps or something like that but to combine the name is just an administrative nightmare. The Marines know they are appreciated by the Navy!

The Marines are in the Navy Department but are a separate Service. They are NOT “part of the Navy”!

The Marines have been trying to do this for at least a couple of decades and they deserve more recognition as a separate fighting force. But what about the SEALs and the rest of Special Warfare?
But the Marines deserve it first if it is done.

Absurd. By definition a marine is “a member of the military in an infantry or amphibious force under the authority of a navy.” While we all hold the USMC in the highest esteem (for good reason, being the finest marines in the general meaning of the word in the world, and having been so for quite some time), I don’t think it honors them to uglify the name of the service of which they are a part.
