Joint Base continues potential Civil War cannon investigation

Courtesy Photo Archaeologists Dan Hayes and Bill Monaghan search for Civil War cannons in Summerall Field using ground penetrating radar. Interestingly, they found anomalies in the field where the cannon are purportedly located.

A search for Civil War-era cannons on Joint Base Myer-Henderon Hall took a promising turn in late December. The JBM-HH Directorate of Environmental Management coordinated an archaeological investigation with contract archeologists in early December, comprising three sites at Fort Myer. The investigation covered Fort Cass (an area adjacent to Bldg. 224, The Thrift Shop), Fort Whipple (the sustainable park adjacent to Bldg. 42, the historic Meigs Modular home built in 1877), and Summerall Field.

George Patton was base commander at Fort Myer from 1938 to 1940 and was a student of Civil War history. Holien explained Patton knew from his own experience that prior to World War I, the government went on a massive scrap drive for metal to melt down for war armaments.

‘‘I can only conjecture that Patton saw this coming and had the cannons here buried. There’s no other reason for anyone else to have done it,” Holien said.

‘‘I think this [find] would be a great plus for Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, The Department of the Army and the Department of Defense, to have the cannons that protected Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and preserved the state of the Union to actually be found here on Fort Myer just as we’re entering the sesquicentennial year commemoration of the Civil War from 2011 through 2015,” said Holien.

I popped that movie in last night .... fell asleep and awoke early this morning ... found the point I had "left off at" and finished it around 0430.

"George Patton was base commander at Fort Myer from 1938 to 1940 and was a student of Civil War history. Holien explained Patton knew from his own experience that prior to World War I, the government went on a massive scrap drive for metal to melt down for war armaments."

.. fits the image portrayed in the movie.

I sure would like to believe in re-incarnation .... but God says ... no .... YOU do it.

I would love to believe this was the work of the American Hanz Guderian, but sans written evidence to the contrary, in 1938 Patton was hanging on to his position in the pre-war US Army by his eye teeth and would have kissed FDR's blarney stone to keep his commision.

By burying US Army assets at his post Patton would have lost his job. Remember, democrats is democrats; they are vermin that feed parasiticly upon the body of Lady Liberty accelerating her demise at every turn.

If Patton did bury cannons to preserved them for later history, I would suspect that he would have taken care to keep them from deteriorating.

If cosmoline wasn't around then or not available, did he pack them in grease and wrap them?
