The shell fired by the 16" guns on the New Jersey (I was told) weighted 1600 lbs. and could hit a target the size of a VW Beetle 22 miles away. At night you could see the muzzle flash 6-7 miles away. A three gun salvo to the port or starboard move the ships bow over about 12-16 inches. The most I ever saw them fire though was 2 barrels at a time. The black smoke and fire that comes out looks just awesome.
