Through out the Chosin Reservoir battle both the Army and the Marines had constant daylight support from aircraft of the Marine Air Wing. This is a photo of the type of aircraft that the Marine Air Wing used. Without these pilots and aircraft the outcome of the battle could have had a different ending. These pilots did a very outstanding job.

Aerial reconnaissance pilots reported Chinese forces massing on the Yalu, and by mid-November, Chinese strength at the Yalu was estimated at 300,000, but MacArthur discounted these reports. This has always appalled me.
On the one hand, the Inchon landing was unique in warfare, daring, unexpected, successful beyond anticipation, never duplicated.
Then there is the denial of the Chinese presence--despite friendly recon depicting its enormity.
Truman would not consider the nuclear option for fear of the Soviets, just as LBJ hobbled the Vietnam campaign due to his alleged fear of the Soviets--and the Maosketeers.
We are not so constrained at present, having sent the Russians dashing to Damascus and muting the normally vociferous Chinese.
Shock and awe has opened their eyes and shut their mouths.
The glorious leader Saddam Hussein and his execrable offspring are in complete control of the ash heap of history.

I think maybe MacArthur got a big dose of Victory fever, sort of like Eisenhower did right before the Bulge.

On a trip south from Washington D.C. after some Naval curator appointments ....found myself at Yorktown Virginia.
Several battlefields....the continental fields with the French cannon and mortars....down the road....a cemetary marking the pitched battles fought there during the civil war.
Was walking along the bays shore...looking out...wondering what that huge French fleet looked like ...to the British....and to the cheering Continental Army.

Reflecting on these photos tonight..was thinking about a comment North Korea's pudgy psychotic leader made the other day to Washington...
"We will continue our weapons research......we are not going out like Iraq".

The Battle of The Chosin Reseroir should be required reading for all Americans and should be sent to every potential foe this country will ever have. Might even do the French some good.

Superb thread....just super...many thanks.......
FYI, I thought I'd relate one of the more interesting bits of Marine Corps legend, first told to me, and several others in PLC in 1967 at Quantico by a gunny who was at Chosin.....The Marines did indeed, bring out their dead on the march, but supposedly there is a secret, carefully concealed mass grave with the bodies of some 250 Marines, left behind when the breakout began. It was deemed logistically impossible to cary them all out. The location, and the identities of the desd Marines, is one of the most closely guarded secrets at 8th & I, and when the evil regime in NK finally crumbles, one of the first missions we undertake will be the recovery and return of the honored dead to US soil for proper burial. I've done a little bit of reading and research on this over the years...you get a few "hints" in some of the stories of the Chosin. It sounds "real" to me, and one can easily envision a purposeful decision to keep any record of it out of the public domain, lest the idiots in NK decide to go on an expedition. But the knowledge, and the info is carefully handed down to a few of the top brass in the Corps each year, to make sure that the mission is kept current . I hope, and trust, it's true, and that they'll be returned soon.
Thought you might enjoy this..
