Thanks Light Speed. Interesting chain of events.

When Ballard found the Bismarck, he stated the upper superstructure damage was pretty bad but the Bismarck's hull showed little damage. So it looks like the theory the Crew scuttled her is preety good.

The debate on Bismarck still continues ...a recent expedition with rov camera discovered several torpedo impacts..which did come later on..after Bismarck was basically an inactive hulk.

Tovey had to leave in King George V...Rodney had to go too..so the clean up was left to the torpedo.

The Brits are saying the Bismarck was going under anyway from the huge holes in her from the Torpedos..but also agree that the Germans had opened flood valves.

The documentary was on just recently..2 versions..a 2 hour and another 1 hour version.

The 1 hour version has more info on Germany's naval command and the problems with Staff and Hitler..coupled with operations at sea.

Hope you get to see these doc's SAM..the battle animation and real time film of Bismarck are incredible.

I believe I copied this to VHS somewhere..if in time you do not see it via your local PBS station..will dupe a copy for you...its a great study on the battle...the images are very haunting.
