There has been some debate (revision) saying the numbers were inflated and that it wouldn't have been as bad as predicted and that the Japanese would have surrendered anyway.
Based on their past performances during the war, I don't buy the arguements.

Fortunatly the bureaucracy put a stop to that sort of non-sense. Who knows where that could lead.

How many of us would not be here today, because their family members died during this invasionGood Morning, Johnny.
It is a sobering thought isn't it?

LOL! I think we've perfected the self-perpetuating bureaucracy.

I recommend John Ray Skates'
The Invasion of Japan-Alternative to the Bomb for further reading on plans for Olympic and Coronet. Richard Frank's
Downfall-The End of the Japanese Empire is another excellent reference.
The fact is the A-bombs killed far less people than would have died if the invasion had happened, or even if the plans for blockade and conventional bombardment had continued.
My wife's aunt and cousin died at Nagasaki, but even she believes this now.

Thanks Gator Navy. Good to see you.
It's true it would have been worse for both us and the Japanese had the bombs not been used.
To: Johnny Gage
Agreed. The extent we were willing to go deploying all those troops is astounding...we made the right choice.

feather and Darksheare, you two New Yorkers check in when you can and let us know how you are.
Our other New Yorker (that we know of) is Victoria and we know she still had power late last night but we haven't heard from you two.
We hope you are making it through okay.
To: HiJinx
My father was slated to go in on Coronet, I believe. He'd already been hit on Okinawa, as had 90% of his Marine company, and he knew he was in for it. (He ended up giving 35 years to the USMC, fighting in Korea and three tours in Viet Nam.)
Hurray for the Bomb, for otherwise I wouldn't be here!
To: HiJinx
LOL! Never used a bird for a hankie?

Feather managed to post at the Belve saying she was going to be gone for a few days.
Just heard a report that a cup of Darksheares coffee was spilled on a control panel at a plant in Ohio. News at 11.

I didn't do it!

"Burning Mountain" is interesting becasue it's main character is an American Officer who was raised in Japan as a child, speaks the language and has childhood friends and a girlfriend in Japan.
