Anti-gun control facts, statistics, and quotes (for college assignment)(Vanity)

The US Department of Justice has a couple of interesting studies out there. One is Gun Use by Male Juveniles: Research and Prevention. The "Rochester" section points out that the kids who own guns legally (for sporting use) are about statistically as likely to get involved in crime with a gun as the kids who do not own guns. However, the kids who owned guns illegally are from 5 to 10 times more likely to get involved in gun crime.

Which means to me that it ain't the guns ... it's the bad guys with the guns.

A summary of this data is also available in Urban Delinquency and Substance abuse which shows that, in one segment of the study, NONE of the boys who legally own guns committed any gun related crime. See Figure 13 on page 18 for that tidbit.

They are interesting points and lots of fun to throw up to the hopolophobes.

Okay, I got the grade back on my presentation and my teacher gave me 100%. Here's what she had to say:

"Slide 5: You could put all of those types of guns as sub-bullets (no pun intended) Slide 10: Write out the word "Percent" rather than using the symbol. These are minor point-losers; you obviously put a lot of effort into your content and did an excellent job staying within the 7x7 rule given your need to use complete quotes, etc. I'm really impressed and have to admit that you gave me some food for thought! Great job, RWB Patriot" (she didn't use my name on this site, I just don't want to put my real name up here).

Now, I'm not sure if I can post it up here because it doesn't have a source page for where I got my information, and I don't know have a website I can give you a link to. If it doesn't need to have a source page, tell me how to upload a PowerPoint document onto this site and I'd be glad to show it to you.

I have made this claim as well, in other words.
You cannot give an inanimate object a moral quality, like good or evil. If you do not then the individual responsible for the "tool" is responsible for his actions with that tool, a claim that the left does not acvocate since it requires personal responsiblility.

I love the second one about the Klan. It reminds me of something I was thinking about recently.

The law in NJ says that no one can posses a firearm unless they have a firearms ID card. To get one you have to pay a small fee, get fingerprinted, and submit to a background check, all of which takes a maximum (by law) of six months. So naturally, the minimum it takes in 5 months, 29 days.

I was thinking that it might be worth it in terms of political momentum, to remind the black community in Newark and Camden, that gun control laws aren't about keeping guns out of the hands of people like me (40 year old, rich white guy from the ex-burbs) but about keeping them out of the hands of people like them. Maybe start some kind of outreach program to help them navigate the law, and get their firearms ID's.

If nothing else it might be a good way to use the identity politics they've been soaked in to a purpose other than the promotion of their continued state dependency. It seems to me all the "more guns less crime" will resonate with them, particularly since it wouldn't specifically be about arming people, but about helping them make it legal to arm themselves.

The problem of course is that you could never get something like that started without a foothold in the community, and most of their community leaders are of the exploitative "Al Sharpton" model, so talking about personal responsibility probably wouldn't go over very well.

But still, I'm thinking about it. It's something I'd be willing to put some time and money into.
