Confederate Flag Raises Flap in School

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - At a time when flag fever is sweeping the United States, a history teacher who used a Confederate flag to illustrate lessons on the U.S. Civil War agreed on Friday to remove the controversial symbol.

The Cleveland school district urged Rebecca Segetti, a teacher at predominantly black John Hay High School, to remove the flag that many people associate with slavery.

A janitor at the school had taken down the flag from Segetti's ninth-grade classroom, but received a letter of reprimand when he refused to put it back up. The district administrator then weighed in, saying in a letter to the school: "Simply put, the district does not condone the hanging of the Confederate flag."

Displays of the American flag have proliferated since the Sept. 11 hijacked plane attacks on New York and Washington.

We scoured the house looking for a flag to put up and all we found was a Confederate battle flag. And I'm not buying a US flag made in China.

Simply put, we can't afford to let some of the real history invade the myths and lies that we as educators have foisted upon students for the past 100 years.
