Oh, and the API says the world has an 805 year supply of oil at current comsumption rate (and new finds of reserves are increasing significantly, not declining).

At what price per gallon? Have you ever heard of crude oil cost per barrel averaging? Imported crude oil is imported because it is the path of least resistance, economically. Production costs and taxes on production, and shipping costs are much higher in the US. If we were totally dependent upon US crude oil to meet our national demand, then you are looking at probably $6.00 per gallon gasoline prices, minimum. . Waivers would have to be granted by the US government on environmental issues to allow use of high-sulfur crude oil, allow offshore drilling, allow expanded secondary and tertiary methods of recovery to be used in older oilfieds.....all kinds of issues which you have not cranked into your (70 years of remaining supplies)...In addition, you would be looking at re-vamping refineries which were built for certain types of imported crude oil (i.e., low-sulfur, high yielding lighter end type crudes). Additional coker facilities would have to be installed and tremendous investment in new scrubbing facilities... Why? Because the bulk of the US demand for crude is for the lighter-end products (naphthas and distillates) for gasoline and aviation fuel. The rest, of course, are residual products: heating oil, ship bunkers, asphaults, coke, etc. Watch the American public scream when they have to pay the price...especially the libs... But if we don't pay the price for our own oil independence, then we will lose our national independence...Power goes to the country who has economic power and if you pull the plug on our energy overnight, we are in deep doo doo.
