A massive uprising of Mahdi'ists would undoubtedly set in motion a chain of events which might bring about the unleashing of the nuclear arsenals of the US and USSR (to say the least).
Afterward Islam would be decidedly a minority religion confined, as it were, to a couple of the Westernmost islands of Indonesia.
This is not exactly the kind of thing a Messiah-like figure strives for.

But we have more millions. Since we have much better toys, the exhcange ratio will be in our favor. It might be ugly, but there can be little doubt of the final outcome.
