ISRAEL DISCLOSES ITS NUCLEAR OPTION

TEL AVIV [MENL] -- For the first time, Israel has allowed an open discussion of its nuclear program.

The discussion is contained in a new documentary on Israel's nuclear capability. It is the first time the government has allowed the production and airing of such a program.

In contrast to previous documentaries on the subject produced abroad, Israeli leaders agreed to be interviewed. Foreign Minister Shimon Peres reviewed the history of Israel's nuclear program and its cooperation with France in the 1950s and 1960s.

Neither Peres nor any other Israeli official acknowledges that the Jewish state has nuclear weapons. Previous assessments have asserted that Israel has up to 200 nuclear warheads.

The documentary, "A Bomb in the Basement Israel’s Nuclear Option," was produced in France, Israel and the United States and quotes former U.S. officials recalling Washington's opposition to Israel's nuclear program. The documentary will be aired in Israel on Sunday.

"We thought it was a mistake on Israel’s part to develop nuclear weapons," Paul Warnke, former chief U.S. arms control negotiator, said.

The screening of the documentary comes amid Israel's quiet debate on increasing its nuclear deterrence in face of Iran's development of atomic weapons. Former Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has privately urged a change in Israel's policy of nuclear ambiguity once Iran is assessed at having a nuclear weapon, expected as early as 2004.

France supplied most of the components and technology for Israel's nuclear program. The French secretly constructed the nuclear reactor in Dimona, which remains off-limits to international inspection. The project was supervised by French Atomic Energy Commission director Francois Perrin.

"Francois Perrin called [then-French Prime Minister] Guy Mollet the day after my visit and told him that Israel should be supplied with a nuclear bomb," former French defense official Abel Thomas said. "That's how it was."

The documentary quotes what it termed foreign sources as saying that Israel declared a nuclear alert three times in its history. The sources said that during the 1970s, Israel built three to five atom bombs annually and today has an arsenal of at least 200 nuclear weapons.

The film quotes military analyst and commentaror Ze’ev Schiff as saying that he was the only journalist allowed to tour the Dimona nuclear facility.

I defined who UAIF's are. As to where, here on FR. You'll have to read up if you want to research this subject further.

Not worth the effort...

This poster and many others on this thread have stated that there are "3 million Israelis."

I have not seen it refuted, so I take it upon myself to state that there are well in excess of 5 million Jews in Israel and the Territories. There are also some 1 million Muslims who are citizens and residents of Israel. There are also some 1 million persons who are neither Muslims nor Jews, and this would include European and Asian Christian guest workers as well as overstayed tourists, and local Christians of Greek, Armenian, and others as well as "Palestinian" ie Arabic-speaaking, stock...

I think we need these numbers to put the some 2 million (at most) Islamic Arab Palestinians into perspective when they say that that "their" country is being "occupied" by someone else. If Israel is "occupying" the land between Jordan and Mediterranean, then the United States is "occupying" Indiana, and Britain is "occupying" Stratford upon Avon.

First we got “the bomb” and that was good,
‘cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got “the bomb” but that’s OK
‘cause the balance of power’s maintained that way

Who’s next?

France got “the bomb” but don’t you grieve,
‘cause they’re on our side. I believe.
China got “the bomb” but have no fear,
They can’t wipe us out for at least 5 years.

Who’s next?

Then Indonesia said that they
Were gonna get one any day
South Africa wants two, that’s right,
One for the black and one for the white.

Who’s next?

Egypt’s gonna get one too
Just to use on “you know who”,
Israel’s getting tense,
want’s one in self defense.
The Lord’s our shepherd says the Psalm
But just in case,
We’re gonna get a bomb

Luxembourg is next to go,
And who knows,
Maybe Monaco
We’ll try to stay serene and calm,
When Alabama gets “the bomb”

With apologies to Tom Lehrer

They don't need to blackmail anyone. If the Arabs attack Israel and drive it to the brink of destruction, unleashing these weapons on the Arab states would destabilize the region and probaly render useless 40% of the world's known oil supplies. That is enough of a reason for the west to try to bring peace to the region. It's not blackmail, it's just a practical geopolitical reality.

The Arabs should make peace with Israel. There is no reason for them to continue their hateful rhetoric, especially considering the west's support for a Palestinian state. It's time for the Arab states to step forward and offer a quid pro quo.

Get rid of the Pagan religion part and I would probably agree with you. But saying that Islam is a pagan religion is like saying that Buddhism is a pagan religion.

I meant Israel's nuclear weapons, read #15. UAIF's only voiced an opinion that Israel would be justified to nuke just about any country, not limited to their attackers, if they were to go down....

Any country? No. Just the nearby Muslim nations. Israel will not waste precious time trying to figure out *exactly* who done it. The hammer will drop on the Arab Muslim world. Just as it should. Some oil fields will be obliterated too.

"Francois Perrin called [then-French Prime Minister] Guy Mollet the day after my visit and told him that Israel should be supplied with a nuclear bomb,"

Oh no, don't tell me Israel got their bomb from FRANCE! And all this time I thought Israel was a nuclear power.

If their bombs work as well as Renault cars, the Arabs will be able to salvage any that fall on them and sell them to Japan as scrap iron.

My point is that people always go too far in a statement like this and end up turning people off of the REAL message. I was telling where I thought he went too far. Was it THAT HARD to figure out? I wrote it as simply as I could!!

How do you feel about the carrying of guns by irresponsible tall children or the legally insane?

The same as I feel about responsible short criminals and small insane children.

There was no Israel either until 1948, but Palestine is mentioned by Shakespeare and Chaucer.

Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

God. Joshua 1, vs.2. ~2000 years BC (or ~3560 years before Shakespeare).

Muhammed, the founder of Islam, lived from about 570 AD - 632 AD.

So the relationship with Israel is based on fear of Israel nuking the oil fields? Nice "ally" we have there. That fully realizes that its nukes can be used as blackmail. But it's not blackmail. Uhuh.

couldn't agree more - the French are intent on destabalizing the entire region - remember they were the ones who helped the Iraqi's w/ their N program. Can we please nuke Paris when we're done with the Taliban?
