I have a confession to make,
As a young boy in New Orleans, I used to play on a WWI memorial in Audubon Park.
I used the lanyard of it's flag pole as a swing.
I wrapped a piece of wood in the lanyard and hung on as I would swing around the flagpole.
Back then the Names on it meant nothing to me
and since it was all but abandoned by the city, it's workers, and the community at large,
I had great fun doing so
Now I am older and know better
Now I know the pain of the loss of brothers in arms,
and why their memories should never be forgotten
and that Memorials to them should never be left to abuse or neglect.
His man was doing what most around him would not have done
He was paying respect to a Memorial in a deep and personal way.
He was not homeless,
his home is America
He wasn't a vagrant,
he was employed by those whose names were on the stone of that memorial.
They called upon him to defend it,
to remind people of it's symbolism
to breath new life back into the rememberance of those that laid down their lives defending this country.
What more could the city of San Deigo ask for than such a man and his dog ready to stand guard on such a Memorial.
