Chelsea joins the hecklers at peace rally
The Times (U.K.) ^ | 11/10/2001 | GLEN OWEN

CHELSEA CLINTON was among a group of American students which disrupted an anti-war meeting in Oxford, it was revealed last night.

Frustrated at anti-American feeling, the daughter of the former President arrived at the 500-strong meeting in Oxford Town Hall with a dozen friends who heckled speakers.

Miss Clinton, a postgraduate student in international relations at University College, Oxford, her father’s alma mater, has confessed that she is feeling isolated and threatened by the mood she has detected at the university. She found it difficult encountering “anti-American feeling” from peace demonstrators.

As soon as last Thursday’s meeting, organised by the Oxford Stop the War Coalition, began, members of her mostly American group shouted patriotic slogans from the back. Speakers were prevented from continuing after other young Americans approached them and unfurled a Stars and Stripes flag.

Chris Harman, editor of the Socialist Worker, said: “When the group turned up I thought, oh no, we’re going to have some rugby-type fracas, but luckily it was nothing like that.” The flag-bearers were eventually sent back to their seats by a 76-year-old American woman called Barbara, an Oxford resident.

Katy Beinart, a student CND member who spoke at the meeting, said that Miss Clinton had arrived “making a lot of noise”.

When John Haylett, editor of the Morning Star, began to argue that the media had failed to consider the effects of the bombing on Afghan civilians, Miss Clinton and her friends called out that he should remember the victims of the terrorist attacks on New York. Mr Haylett responded that such meetings were the only way to put an alternative viewpoint to that portrayed in the media.

Miss Clinton left with her Secret Service bodyguards shortly afterwards, stopping to buy a copy of the Morning Star from a vendor, and making “yet more noise”, according to Ms Beinart. “It was a shame that Chelsea Clinton felt the need to interrupt a peaceful discussion with what I felt were inappropriate comments,” she said.

Speakers at the meeting, including the MP Jeremy Corbyn, said yesterday that Miss Clinton took their comments too personally.

bill clinton prefers biting lips to beating with sticks BUMP!

At the end of his speech, Mr. Clinton -- who was impeached for lying under oath about a sexual relationship with a 21-year-old White House intern -- said the entire issue revolves around "the nature of truth."

"This battle fundamentally is about what you think about the nature of truth," he said, noting that God has imposed on us the inability to ever know "the whole truth."

He also championed women's rights in Afghanistan, saying the reason "you see all those sanctimonious guys beating those women with sticks" is because the country's rulers demand strict adherence to the rules.

Bill and Hill have found out that they are not wanted at all in the camera eye now. So Chelsea has become the new Clinton name to take up the front pages and look like some modern day warrior in the U.K., tell me when it is ok to stop throwing up..

What if she inherited the worst of both (not that I've found any good) - scary combo for the future...BC, an understudy of "the father of lies" & HC's "inhuman ambition" .....666?  Nuts don't fall far from a tree <no grin>.

Her parents must be SO ashamed. Imagine their daughter heckling anti-war protesters. And at Daddy's alma mater no less.

"She's just looking for publicity."

After the way she has treated American service people, we are supposed to think that now she is a patriotic American? Bull.

"Of course, she doen't have to worry about the draft to keep her political viability."

If we brought back the draft and opened it to women, she would be vulnerable to drafting. Ummmm.......

"OK, proof that she still is covered by Secret Service-how many of 'em do you think got stuck with that job?"

How is it that she still has SS protection? How long will this continue?

I understand your suspicion. But....

I say give credit where credit is due. A lot of people changed on 9-11. Chelsea has gotten a close look at politics in a way few of us ever will. So, while not completely trusting of course, I say, "Way to go, Chelsea!" My mom has been praying for her a lot. I prayed for her some. And many others have prayed for Chelsea.

I hate Clinton, but that's a stupid thing for you to say. It's nice to see a 21 year old patriot, no matter how screwed up her parents.

Does Miss Clinton know her father resigned from the Supreme Court? Does she know he is believed to have raped some student on the Oxford campus? Does she know that he brought the Taliban to power and kept them there? Does she know she is an ugly pain-in-the-nass searching for publicity? Why just this morning there was a large spread about Miss Clinton in one of the large East Coast newspapers we do not cite here on FR? What a coincidence! Diverting attention again? Too much Bush in the news? Life's soooooo unfair.

I will probably get spanked for this. But that picture of Chelsea on the Drudge Report reporting on this story was kind of "nice". She looked like a young girl who maybe is clearing her conscience.

When John Haylett, editor of the Morning Star, began to argue that the media had failed to consider the effects of the bombing on Afghan civilians

Huh? Maybe in Britain, but over here that's ALL the media is considering.

BTW, I guess it's pretty obvious Chelsea is going to be running for Rep in 2004.
