Author's note:

The "God Bless America" rally in Little Havana was organized by a handful of community organizations and a radio station, there was very little notice, and almost no advertisement (outside WAQI-AM, Miami), the best estimates placed the crowd at about 150,000.

These rallies are not unusual on Freedom Road, best known as Calle Ocho, they happen regularly, but the majority of the Nation never hears about them, nor do they see the pictures, there is seldom any coverage by the dominant media.

This has become a badge of honor for the participants, we understand WHY the leftist media organizations stay away, they can't demonize and marginalize those whose love and respect for America is so clearly, and frequently evident.

So we take to the streets not expecting to see ourselves in the evening news, but that's OK by us, "what we do, we do because it is the right thing to do, and we do it on our own. Expect nothing from no one; give your all because anything less is unacceptable."

God Bless President Bush, our troops, and God bless the USA.

Luis Gonzalez

This is a post card for our brothers and sisters across the nation, we stand as Americans, for the love of America, and united as one in her defense. In support of our President, our troops, and the American heroes that entered the pages of History on 9-11-01. Their memories will live on as long as mankind loves Freedom. God bless America.

Below are links to the works of Rafael Contreras published on Free Republic.

A voice without fear in a silent herd.

Seaweed from far away

The crowd would not wish Fidel a Happy Birthday

The forbidden fog

Another old man and the sea

In the line of fire

More than a dream

You have a gift, brother, a real gift! This article is in keeping with the high quality of writing we have come to expect from you!

Luis, you let me know the next time you and your FRiends will be marching down Calle Ocho, and I'll drive down and march with you, my FRiend, if you will have me. I'll need about two days notice.

You are blessed, Luis...

You make me wish I were Cuban!

I feel I've missed the struggle and the sacrifice needed to REALLY know America...

I feel it in my soul... yes, sacred ground it is...

When you walk back, down this street, hold high your head, because you walk on sacred ground. When you walk on this street, you are walking down Freedom road.

Great read Luis.

Thanks for the heads-up. ;-)

Gracias, Luis. I always look forward to your postings.

Today we do the same in Austin... Rally for America at the Capitol at 4pm. Barbara Olson's sister will be speaking, among other honored guests. If we have a fraction of the participation y'all had, I'll be thankful.

I was shouting along and waiving my Stars and Stripes high above my head.

“Muchachón. Hold the flag in your right hand. Never on your left.”

His voice snapped me out of my trance, the old man was smiling, and looking at me, he spoke again.

“I hope you don’t mind me advice, but you should hold it in your right hand. I don’t think many of us here like the left very much.”

I smiled and changed my flag to the right.

From now on, I shall always hold the flag in my right hand! (I am left handed):-)

Cuban American bump.

There is something very special about growing up as a Cuban American. It was the same as growing up as a 1940's American.

Unfortunately, too many kids have grown up as Berkley Americans. They've missed out on quite a lot.

150,000?!

I'm happy when we get 300 gun rights supporters to a rally.

Beautiful piece, Luis!

If the unappreciative American sheeple could get off their whining and complaining perch, they could learn real patriotism from the Cuban exile community.

They are freedom loving patriots who love America and liberty more than life itsself.

Viva Cuba Libre!

I am your 'hermano' my friend.

This is the reason I read posts on FR. Not for the bickering and relatively small portion of posters who GO A BIT TOO FAR, BUT FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE POSTS LIKE THIS

Norb in JAX put me on to your article. Beautiful! I was living in Georgia when the Elian affair took place. At times there were only one or two of us in front of the Court House there, until bigger demonstrations came on. The day Manny Diaz et al showed up to present arguments, there were many of us outside, but a few disgruntled leftists showed up to provoke us. Nobody - thank goodness - took the bait. I too am writer, and have recently finished a novel encompassing 50 years in the life of a Cuban from a fishing village on Cuba's north coast, in his journey to college in the United States, to American citizenship, and to a fantasy style return to a cleansed homeland in the year 2003. Visit my page www.greathammerhead.com, or visit my poems pages at www.mipogallery.com/rick.htm http://pub59.ezboard.com/fdulcefrm19 Hope to hear from you soon. I just joined this url. Thank you for such a beautifully written piece. Thanks to Norb for pointing it out. Rickhammerhead (Raul)

Muchas gracias for a very powerful story! Your writing paints such a vivid picture!

This brought back childhood memories of my immigrant grandfather, his fierce love of America and his pride in being an American. I never realized how much this country meant to him--and should mean to all of us--until I set foot on foreign soil.
