Former Harvard University President Nathan Marsh Pusey, whose struggles with campus politics and achievements as a fund-raiser came to define the university presidency in the 1950s and 1960s, died early yesterday at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. He was 94.

Harvard Hates ROTC But that may be changing. HARVARD SQUARE is looking strange these days. With red, white, and blue fluttering from every street lamp and storefront, the city affectionately known as the "People's Republic of Cambridge" seems to have undergone a complete makeover. In the wake of September 11, this new patriotic sentiment has revived an old debate: whether Harvard University should allow the Reserve Officer Training Corps to return to campus. The conflict over ROTC's compatibility with Harvard goes back a generation. Then the issue was Vietnam; now it's gays in the military. A university code prohibits student groups from discriminating on the basis of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. This means, for instance, that the university will not recognize single-sex fraternities and sororities; nor, because of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, will it allow the formation of a ROTC unit on campus.

I wonder if McCarthy and Pusey are continuing their battle.

He slapped the hippies around and that is a good thing, but I imagine that there were quite a few Communists on the faculty of Harvard. Or at least real sympathizers filling young minds with mush year after year. Oh well. Nobody who goes to Harvard is surprised by what they find there anymore. There are plenty of other opportunities.

Mr. Pusey was a former member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches...

Sounds like Mr. Pusey won't need a sweater.

Ha! I was born in Appleton around the time Mr. Pusey was president of Lawrence. My family attended All Saints Episcopal Church near the campus.
I expect my parents (both graduates of Lawrence) knew Mr. Pusey. I know they knew Joe McCarthy as they hosted a fund raiser for him in our home.

Houdini was born in Appleton too. There is a Houdini museum across the street from All Saints Episcopal.

Harvard head urges a deeper patriotism-- CAMBRIDGE - After a quiet few months as Harvard University's new president, former US treasury secretary Lawrence H. Summers has begun using the post as a bully pulpit to forward a bold idea: In response to the Sept. 11 attacks, the academic world should get more in line with mainstream Americans.
