The big media recount of the presidential vote in Florida last year has had the predictable effect of prompting the players to revert to type.

The Bush White House, predictably insufferable in its unctuousness, dismisses the recount as less important than Sunday-afternoon football. Because no one is about to push the Bush family furniture onto a van and ship it back to the ranch, this latest display of contempt is particularly unbecoming.

KEYWORDS:
First, note that this appeared today on page A-22 which I don't think is the Chronicles OP/ED page.

Second, the notion that:

Dissenting members of the U.S. Supreme Court promoted the idea of conducting a common-sense statewide recount, with clear standards, but failed. Their colleagues instead stopped the count in what was supposed to be a free and fair election and which instead is a stain on history."

Any effort to set new standards AFTER the election is against long-standing Federal law, was something NEVER requested by the Gore team, and the "standards" of these media recounters still varied widely from county to county.

Last, this author is a hack and her "news item" is nothing more than another DNC-inspired piece of crap.

"It turns out, though, that a statewide count of 175,010 uncounted ballots -- those rejected by machines as having no votes, as well as those rejected because they showed more than one vote -- would have given the state, and the presidency, to Gore."

Does the ridiculousness of this sentence need to be pointed out?

Common sense did not survive the political and legal hothouse of last December.

What it didn't survive was this writer's education.

predictably insufferable in its unctuousness

I think this phrase describes the author more than the Bush White House.

BTW, does anyone even care about the recount news, other than the media? I really don't get the feeling the people care at all!

It is obvious that the democrats plan on suing and recounting until they get the results they want in every election from now on.
