An unusual mayoral endorsement is dialing up some campaign controversy for Mayor Lee Brown. It's coming from the sister of James Byrd, Junior, the man dragged to death behind a pickup near Jasper three and a half years ago.

As the runoff election draws closer, the race for the city's top job is picking up steam and in more ways than one. A new campaign ad endorsing Mayor Lee Brown is not sitting well with some.

The phone ad says: "A few years ago, my brother James Byrd was chained to the back of a pickup truck and dragged to death just because of the color of his skin."

It's a telephone message recorded by Louvon Harris and it continues to say: "That's why the election for mayor is so important to me. Orlando Sanchez, the republican candidate for mayor led the fight against the James Byrd Jr. Hate Crime law. Orlando Sanchez supporters sent out fliers calling Mayor Brown racist names, and Orlando Sanchez refused to condemn this hate material."

Dallas Lawson was one of many who received a call today and said it was very upsetting: "Thought the Jasper incident was just devastating and to relate that to the Houston campaign, the Mayor. I thought was a very low thing to hit."

Her son Donald Wasson agreed, "I thought it was kind of offensive."

The Brown campaign acknowledges it is paying for the ads and said that James Byrd's sister approached them wanting to help.

State representative Senfronia Thompson supports the ad. She was one of the authors of the Hate Crime Bill and is a Brown supporter.

Thompson said, "People should know what his whole record is and one of the things about his record is that he voted against hate crimes."

The ad ends with: "Please make sure to vote for Mayor Brown, because if hate wins Houston loses."

Orlando Sanchez campaign spokesperson Chris Begala said, "The Brown campaign has to go negative because their record is one of failed management and fiscal irresponsibility."

Joe Householder with the Lee Brown campaign countered with, "What Mayor Brown has a problem with and what the city should have a problem with is an elected official who won't stand up and say hate crimes are wrong."

The battle will continue until the runoff.

The Sanchez campaign told 11 News that he'll be endorsed Tuesday by former President and Mrs. Bush.

The runoff is Saturday, December 1, you can vote from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

I hope this produces such backlash they'll hesitate to play the race card ever again.

Since this is a local (Houston) issue I was hesitant to post to Breaking News, but I think given the sensitivity of the racism, it may deserve the Breaking News status. If you agree, would you please elevate it.

Unfortunately, that's not likely. On the other hand, (re)Joyce called in to Jon Matthews yesterday morning about the ad. She was absolutely livid. Jon finally had to cut her off because she was going on and on about it.

Lee . P . Brown, like his idol Klinton, has no shame.

Texas Yellow Rose

MEET THE MAYOR

Lee (Out-of-town) P. (Pothole) Brown

Orlando Sanchez/Runoff candidate: "Nothing surprises me from a campaign in a mode of desperation."

Mayor Brown's campaign says the calls won't stop. In fact, more calls are on the way in the coming days. (THIS MAN IS THE WORST POSSIBLE EXCUSE OF A HUMAN BEING I HAVE EVER SEEN.  IN FACT, I'M BEGINNING TO QUESTION IF HE IS HUMAN!)

Meantime, the Sanchez campaign is hoping for a big boost from a big name politician.

The campaign says former President George Bush and his wife, Barbara, will endorse Sanchez in a news conference. The Brown campaign says it's not surprising that Bush, a Republican, would support Sanchez, who's also a Republican.

I hope it rains on his PARADE big time.  More rain = LESS BROWN VOTERS!

Does Houston use the new touch screen voting machines? You know the ones that record your finger prints when you touch the screen to enter your vote? Checks the prints against the NCIC database. Any outstanding warrants the smiling cop arrests you.

Wouldn't want any fellons voting in Houston.

I can dream can't I?

Brown is also the former police commisioner of New York under the worst mayor in New York history, David Dinkins. That's where Brown earned the nickname out of town Brown. He took frequent "junkets" out of twon. On the occasion of 3 days of rioting where blacks were rioting and killing jews in Crown Heights, Brown of course was conveniently out of town I'm sure on more important business than per chance quelling a riot

It's also worth noting that during the Dinkin's administration, of which Brown was part, there were arounf 2,200 murders per year, a large majority of the victims and perps were black. It took the Guliani administration to get the murder rate down to levels not seen since the 60's around 600 or so. Now that equates in 8 years to about 10,000 lives being saved of which probably 7,000 would likely be black persons. Now when do you think the Byrd family will speak up about their beloved mayors management skills.

I just voted early. It took all of about 2 minutes. The new eSlate machines work quite nicely.

Houstonians! Get out and vote early.

Now when do you think the Byrd family will speak up about their beloved mayors management skills.

There are three cards the mayor is playing, two openly. The two open ones are race-baiting and 'rat propaganda, the third is legal corruption. By legal, I mean he has manipulated government to the tune of about a billion dollars for boondoggle projects that benefit downtown fatcats. Meanwhile public services have taken a seat in the back of the bus. Potholes that'll swallow a Volkswagen go unrepaired while city employees sleep in their "Public Works" trucks. Firemen die because Brown cut their staffing below state and federal minimums. We have twelve or fourteen folks dressed up like clowns who are city "ambassadors" - wandering around only in downtown, of course. Never mind that "downtown" Houston is only about twelve blocks square - the dough goes there because that's where the fatcats want it.

Brown is an incompetent, race-baiting, desperate 'rat. There is no low to which he won't stoop. Wait until they start the calls about Orlando eating babies.

Thompson [Brown supporter] said ". . . he [Sanchez] voted against hate crimes."

This woman is so incoherent she states her case backwards.
