[history]
U.S. immigration policy was in need of a major fix before Sept. 11, but the issue has taken on new urgency in light of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. However, Americans won't be any safer from terrorist attacks by drastically limiting the number of Indian engineering students or Mexican poultry workers who come here, or by preventing the parents or children of Chinese immigrants from joining families already here.

It's a start. But the people who got us into this mess shouldn't presume they can get us out.

Typical government modus operandi of creating a problem by government activity and/or regulation and then proposing more government activity and/or regulation as the solution.
To: George Smiley
Don't seal the borders until all illegals are ejected, then seal the borders.
To: George Smiley
I haven't read the whole article, but I don't believe any "sealing" of the borders should block any sort of serious "guest worker" program. But to keep "porous borders" just so we can have such a program should not be tolerated.
I think it's a matter of making this acknoledgement of the "guest worker" a "formal" one rather than the "informal" acceptance it has had in the past.

Don't Seal the Borders Really, All that annoying barking would bug the locals no end!!! PLus just imagine the cost in fish and brightly colored balls!!!!
ON the up side though, is the fact that much of the costs could be recouped in the clubbing of baby seals and the sale of their coats. ;-)

Before proposing a solution, consider that ultimately neither the Berlin Wall nor the Great Wall of China was successful.

The dramatic reduction in the flow of illegal aliens this year indicates........That perhaps we weren't that efficient in capturing them this year?
And might this translate into a dramatic reduction in the rolls of new democrats being registered among border states (which is probably whats bugging Miss Chavez the most)?
We in California don't need any more democrats, thank you.
To: Old Hickory
I never said I was a fan of globalism!
IMHO:
1. We keep up with who's visiting and stop giving out visas as casually as bus transfers;
2. We stop all this multiculturalism/cultural equivalency BS.
To say that all cultures are morally equivalent puts one on the same side as (or at least gives tacit approval to) those cultures which practice female circumcision, infanticide and slavery.
3. For those who emigrate here, we need to revive the concept of the melting pot.
To: George Smiley
The Berlin wall was used to keep people in not out. The Great Wall of China was used to keep armed invading armies out. Apples an limes.

I see yours, too, and money is indeed the name of the game.
But in these times we need to examine whether each solution that is being proposed will actually solve the problem mentioned, or if it is just an expedient method of increasing the sphere of state power.

The Berlin wall was used to keep people in not out.As was the 'Iron Curtain'. People must be tricked into socialism. The Leftist/Socialist/Commie pr*cks have been building support amongst the general populace for several decades now, if not a few generations. It boggles my mind how they could burrow into middle class western society as far as they have.

I took so little, they teach the teachers, they report the news, they judge from the benches, and they own the civil service sectors. All in one generation. Short of revolution it may take a generation to take the country back. And having uncontrolled borders makes it that much more difficult.

Ok, I don't understand all that, and that's ok. God Love You All FReepers.

RE#4I was going to say the same exact thing.I do however believe we could reopen them eventually but only when we have much stricter laws requiring ID,work documents, etc.Except this time, enforce it!A computerized tracking system for visas cant be that hard, hell,we put a man on the moon!
To: dennisw
The one on the bottom would be "bolt them"!!!

I agree. However finding, processing, and expelling 8,000,000 illegals will take some time. Then we can have a sane border policy.

No, Linda, it won't make America any safer. Just better.

And to think that this illegal alien-employing low-life almost became Sec. of Labor. Scary stuff. But Elaine Chao is no better. In fact, the way the unions accepted nomination of Chao so happily leads me to suspect she's just as corrupt as your average Clintonista.

Can you be more succinct?
The big outcry now is from the rich and famous. They can't imagine not having that cheap, hard-working Mexican help. Thousands of law-breaking employers continue ignoring the law and hiring illegals are equally loud in their support for open borders. Will the Prez and Congress withstand the lobbying that is now at fever pitch for allowing the law to be broken?

The globalists want the borders open(to destroy America), so they will stay open...until the American people wake up and raise some real hell!

Yet even before Sept. 11, the number of illegal aliens caught crossing the Mexican border was down drastically--about 25% less than the previous year--largely due to the downturn in the U.S. economy, which made scarcer the jobs the illegal aliens were seeking. Since the attack, even fewer have been caught. Less than half as many illegal aliens were apprehended trying to enter the U.S. in October 2001 than in the previous October. Boy am I glad this woman did not get a government job...she loves her illigal workers so much that she is afraid that a real boarder policy might mean she has to pay American wages ...

"The globalists want the borders open(to destroy America), so they will stay open...until the American people wake up and raise some real hell!" Okay, according to you, open borders = destroying America. Would you kindly define "American" people? Should the cut-off date be 1776, 1876, 1976, etc, and from what region, and/or what percentage of what race, to qualify to be American? Before we "seal the borders," at least we should have a clear criteria. ?

Citizens of the United States who were born here and didn't get some flimsy Clinton naturalization handout or weasel in as a result of some phony amnesty scheme or anchor baby sham? Works for me :-D
Well, how about a citizen who was not born here, AND didn't get any flimsy Klinton handout (no thank you, puke), etc, who went through the proper process and EARNED the right to be a Citizen of this great country? :-)

Chavez would fit right in in Dubya's cabinet -- she's as open-borderish as Dubya himself.Linda Chavez was one of Bushes first appointments as labor secretary..
"Civil rights groups criticized on Tuesday Mexican American Linda Chavez's appointment as secretary of labor by President-elect George W. Bush. National Council of La Raza Vice President Cecilia Muñoz called Chavez's appointment "very concerning" because "she is against civil rights for Latinos and other minorities." "It seems that Linda Chavez is going to have a lot of problems, judging by her record," Muñoz said."
The unions were after her, and she was considered a far right winger like Ashcroft. She ended up withdrawing herself over some flak about an immigrant she employed.
No doubt her record is very much right wing but on the matter of the Mexican border she and Bush are lefties.-Tom
