Mullah Omar May Go Free

If Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar is captured as a result of a U.S. victory in the Afghan war, there's a chance he will be set free, America's top diplomat in the region admitted Sunday

He is one of those cases that will have to be looked at individually," said U.S. Ambassasdor Kenton Keith, spokesman for the Allied Coalition, in an interview with "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert

When Russert asked point blank whether the U.S. might deliberately "not apprehend Omar - someone who has in fact allowed Osama bin Laden to stay in Afghanistan all these years," Keith said

As I say, (there's) a case-by-case basis for examining and questioning these people. I'm sure that Omar is one of those who will be investigated thoroughly and I expect that he will be brought to justice

When asked to clarify what he meant by "brought to justice," Keith said, "It depends. It's an Afghan - Afghan situation. In the end this battle with the Taliban is an internal Afghan matter. Afghans have to solve it. They are looking at it on a case-by-case basis, we are told

Ambassador Keith also declined to speculate on whether Omar was a likely candidate for trial by a U.S. military tribunal as part of a plan announced by President Bush two weeks ago

It's an option for the president (but) he has not said he is going to use it," he told Russert.

Probably the most illprepared interviewee I've ever seen.

Did he think that he and the Pillsbury Doughboy were going to discuss today's NFL schedule?

The guy maintained the "deer-in-the-headlight" look throughout the entire fiasco.

I saw that interview. The Ambassador started sticking his foot in his mouth, and in an effort to extricate it, made it appear the Omar would go free. There is zero chance that Omar will either not be dead or captured within a few short days.

I'll bet that Keithie boy was an either an appointee of Slick, or a relic from the Ford or Carter administration.

From: Testimony of Ambassador Kenton Keith

According to your link, this guy was not in government on October 10, 2001. If he currently has a government position, he was appointed by Bush.

But then, is he really a government employee currently? Just what is a "spokesman" for the Allied Coalition? I seriously doubt that he is currently an Ambassador. Remember, Ambassadors are usually called by that name, even though they no longer are. Such as Alan Keyes.

This, from the State Department web site - Chronology of the Coalition, for Nov. 20th.

The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad opened a Coalition Information Center. Kenton Keith served as the Center's director.

The guy's been on the job less than a week. No wonder he's stupid.

It's a trip for about the first five minutes...after that, it becomes somewhat irritating.

Oh yes, now that's an understatement!

Omar is a dead man walking, be sure about that.

Yep. What you said. Our brave heroes are just waiting to get the crosshairs on him.

Then, BOOM!

I don't want this guy 'brought to justice'. I want this guy DEAD.

What in the blue hell is the state dept thinking???? I can see this now. Omar survives, and 5 years later, the Taliban is back. The next Bin Laden is out there, and it is DejaVu all over again.

For the safety of this country he must be eliminated, because if he isn't, more Americans will be.

Only if you didn't understand the mark of the beast.
Milosevic is charged with genocide.
McVeigh is executed.
Both are totally innocent.
Omar is their agent. If they let him go free it's just because they still need their services.

I agree with you....but you know how this war is we kiss as#$$

That's what happens when diplomats run things instead of soldiers.

I have a bad feeling about this.

I never did think much of "diplomats". It is "diplomacy" that has gotten us where we are.

Northern Alliance Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullah Abdullah was interviewed on Face the Nation this morning, and he said quite firmly that Mullah Omar is a war criminal who will not be amnestied.
