Personally I believe in the snowball theory with a slight variation. In a million years form now when the sun is burnt out and the earth is but a ball of ice who is really going to give a $hit.

The sun will go giant, before it goes dead.

When the sun goes dead, the earth will get very cold, but there won't be ice, because the water will have long been gone.

Might as well be a million. Actually it's in the billions. And on top of that, the sun is expected to become very large and hot before it freezes. So large and hot that it will expand to envelop earth and vaporize it.
