After a two-year reign as the power behind the throne, Linux has been usurped by Microsoft software on the royal family's Web site.
The queen--or at least her new Web hosting company--has dumped GNU/Linux in favor of Microsoft IIS Web servers, ending the royal family's two-year flirtation with the open-source operating system.
In 1999, the administrator hosting the official site for the British royal family switched from Sun Microsystems' Solaris operating system to Dell Computer servers running Linux and Apache server software, citing better performance. But last Thursday, Linux's reign ended when the site relaunched with its new service provider, CCG.XM, a division of the Cordiant Communications Group.
CCG.XM "works with Microsoft Internet Information Server as standard," a palace representative said.
Linux is considered one of the few challengers to Microsoft's operating system crown and has shown particular strength in the server market.
The royal site was obliged to switch to a new service provider after the former host, a government communications agency, ended its hosting operations.

I'm glad they got the queen, because I get the feeling they are not going to get sales of XP in the US. Have a good night.

Hey, I want what you're smoking. Practically every computer being sold now is packaged with XP. Within a few years, XP will be ubiquitous.

An accident waiting to happen.
Bullsh*t. Properly patched and locked-down IIS servers are just as secure as anything provided with your little college dorm operating system.

Apparently you don't understand the subscription model built into XP.

It would be way cool if Microsoft got to use one of those "By appointment to Her Majesty..." logos on Windows. Doncha love knowing you can eat the same crackers as the queen, or wear the same waxed cotton field jacket?

This is a royal clusterf#ck waiting to happen with all the holes in that web server software.
Partially, it's a problem of lazy sys admins.
Partially, there's more room for problems, because IIS has 2000 times more interface code to worry about than Apache. A blinking cursor is pretty simple to program.

I can't wait until I have to subscribe to use my own computer, nothing beats paying for the OS every 30 days.

I hope the royal family does keep sensitive documents on the thing. Real sensitive.

XP: the last OS you'll ever need. Everything else is just an upgrade.

Since when did you start paying for software, college boy?
