Truck explodes along Zinni's route near Ramallah

A Palestinian truck exploded in northern Ramallah this afternoon just before US envoy General Anthony Zinni's convoy was to pass by on his way to a meeting with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat.

The Palestinian driver was killed in the explosion. There were no other casualties.

The explosion took place on the edge of PA-controlled Area A north of Ramallah, near where IDF troops were operating.

The truck that exploded was carrying a large number of gas canisters, Israel Radio reported.

Field investigators said initial evidence indicates the explosion was a terrorist incident. Security forces suspect the truck was booby-trapped and intended to target either Zinni's convoy or IDF troops in the area. Palestinians said the blast was an accident. The explosion took place near a building used frequently by Palestinian gunmen shooting at IDF troops situated at the Ayosh junction. The regional District Coordinating Office is located adjacent to the scene. Zinni's convoy was briefly delayed and passed through the PA-controlled territory a short time afterwards.
