Robert Fisk of London's Independent says he was set upon and beaten by a mob of Afghan refugees in the Pakistani town of Kila Abdullah. He says he was the victim of a hate crime, attacked simply because he was a Westerner. And he is in favor of hate crimes: "If I were the Afghan refugees of Kila Abdullah, close to the Afghan-Pakistan border, I would have done just the same to Robert Fisk. Or any other Westerner I could find." Fisk claims that the people in the crowd were angry about America's bombing campaign in Afghanistan, though he offers no evidence and was scarcely in a position to conduct interviews.

Of course not.
You see, Fisk's subconcious racism surfaces here. A westerner is expected to act civilized, but a "noble savage" such as an Afghani has the right to act, well - savagely.
The article is long and sort of whiny- he obviously doesn't like A. Sharon. But it has one funny bit (funny to me at least) where a rabbi is explaining that a stone is a lethal object:
"What we should do is go into those vermin pits and take out the terrorists and murderers. Vermin pits, yes, I said vermin, animals. I tell you what we should do. If one stone is lobbed from a refugee camp, we should bring the bulldozers and tear down the first 20 houses close to the road. If there's another stone, another 20 houses. They'd soon learn not to throw stones. Look, I tell you this. Stones are lethal. If you throw a stone at me, I'll shoot you. I have the right to shoot you."
Now, the rabbi is a generous man. He'd been in Israel to donate a vastly important – and, I have no doubt, vastly expensive – medical centre to the country. He was well-read. And I liked the fact that, unlike too many Israelis and Palestinians who put on a "we-only-want-peace" routine to hide more savage thoughts, he at least spoke his mind. But this was getting out of hand. Why should I throw a stone at the rabbi? He shouted again. "If you throw a stone at me, I will shoot you." But if you throw a stone at me, I won't shoot you, I said. Because I have the right not to shoot you. He frowned. "Then I'd say you're out of your mind."

Some Israeli soldiers have been killed by stones. They don't just throw them, some times they launch them from slings and slingshots. Sometimes, while the soldier is distracted by a ten-year-old stone thrower, a Hamas/Fatah/Force 17/Tanzim/Hizbullah/Police gunman is creeping into position to take a sniper shot at the soldier.
I am well aware of this. The most famous example of the lethality of a sling and stone of course being the Biblical account of David and Goliath.
What I found amusing about the account was here is this pacifist, Fisk, sitting there in his 'love and hug thy enemy even as he kills thee' mode and this rabbi is letting him know in no uncertain terms that if somebody or even he (Fisk) threw a stone at him, the rabbi would kill his sorry butt and he finished by telling Fisk he was out of his mind for not feeling the same way. I love it. The rabbi wasn't having none of Fisk's turn the other cheek rubbish. And what's more amusing to me is this guy Fisk is Pro-Palestinian and the Palestinian kids were throwing rocks at him too- just like they were in Afghanistan.
