The biggest problem is that, in the 1990s, the "soccer moms" proved to be more reliable support than the "religious voters." The pro-life activists out here in San Diego deliberately schemed to get a pro-abort, pro-gay-marriage Democrat elected, merely to show their alleged political power (the pro-life leadership was miffed that their anointed candidate only got 5% in the primary). The local GOP, understanding that pulling out an incumbent was much more difficult than getting someone elected to an open seat, didn't appreciate this, and since then, the pro-life community has been treated with suspicion (mostly because we haven't finished purging ourselves of these idiots after five years).

Planned Parenthood spent millions in its effort to defeat George W. Bush. It spent a million or so in its effort to stop Ashcroft. It even maintained an anti-Republican website www.ROEvBUSH.com which it finally pulled after September 11.
And yet, the GOP just allowed $66 million in our tax dollars to go to Planned Parenthood. Sounds like the brain trust at the GOP is "suspicious" of the wrong group.
