Please no flames for starting another LOTR thread, but I don't see an active one right now for Freepers who just came back from viewing the picture today. I just got back and am very interested in everyone else's impressions.
My first thought while seeing it was just how perfect the casting was. Dang, could there have been a better Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, or Saruman?
Merry and Pippen might have been portrayed as a touch too oafish just to get a couple of cheap laughs, but guess what-- it worked. They had me laughing quite a bit. They worked very well together.
And the balrog? The CGI special effects techie who came up with that should get bonus pay. I still can't wind down yet from this movie. Never felt I got more for my money in a very long time.

Yeah, I've always been a Sean Bean fan (Patriot Games, Black Beauty). He was great.

I just got back and it is MINDBLOWING! Some other adjectives that come to mind are terrifying, beautiful, perfect. The scenery of the Shire, Rivendell, Lothlorien, & battle scenes in Moria and other scenes are beyond description. It left me after 3 hrs wrung out, and wanting more. I have to wait another 12 months to see The Two Towers. Enjoy!

Link to LOTR Changes/Errors/Deviations post.
You aren't seeing active posts 'cause we're properly posting these under culture/misc. categories and not on the 'Front Page' or under Breaking News. Perhaps we should have a front page thread just for posting links to others?

Well, I'll go on record
BEFORE seeing it with this:
- My dream-choice for Gandalf would have been Sean Connery
- That Ian McKellan has smeared his personal perversions and moral abominations over the public's face is a minus
- That he has said that acceptance of his portrayal constitutes some sort of acceptance of his perversion is another minus
- That having been said, I intend to keep an open mind to his acting performance, open to enjoying it in spite of what I've been forced to learn of McKellan's private life
- If he succeeds in making me forget (as I *WANT* to forget) that sad (ssad, in fact) information, I will praise his ACTING ability indeed

I haven't seen it yet, and I really hope it's as great as everyone say. I just hope, though, that the movie does not eclipse the book in the same way other blockbusters like "Gone with the Wind" and "The Godfather" have done. For me, the book will always be the definitive version of the story.

An excellent, excellent film, its themes both timeless and timeLY.
Boromir was fantastic, and..well, there are scenes there that, though I knew they were coming, were quite emotional for me.
Though she has limited time, I love Galadriel. I think its because she's Cate Blanchette:) Arwen aka Liv Tyler speaks beautiful Elvish, a catch indeed.
Strider aka Viggo Mortensen turns in a fabulous performance.
PJ did a great job of not showing the Balrog too quickly. He has an excellent sense for building anticipation then ending the suspense in one big wallop.

Don't flame me for this question, please.
I have never read LOTR (I was a Narnia fan) but my husband loves it. Will I enjoy the movie if I've never read the book, or will I be hopelessly confused?
