MERRY CHRISTMAS
Such a wonderful phrase this time of year. The love, family, hope, and joy of it all.......
Just be careful using the phrase. You see, using the term "Merry Christmas" can get you some darn strange looks these days, and might even get you into trouble.
Flying home 2 days ago, I was really in the spirit of the season. Despite the huge lines to check bags and go through security, people were helping each other, directing the lost, and chatting in line to pass the time. Ahhh, Christmas!
When I got to the counter, I showed my ID, answered the questions, and recieved my seat assignment. I got a "Happy Holidays" with my boarding pass. Smiling, I replied, "Merry Christmas to you too."
For that, I got a scowl and a correction: "No, Happy Holidays."
OK. Well, sure. I am used to this, kind of. We made a "Merry Christmas" flyer for our office last year. It got pulled down from the hallways, and we were admonished to not use terms that were not "inclusive."
I thought about this as I walked to the gate. As I entered the aircraft, I got a "Seasons Greetings." Oh well, better give it a shot:
"Merry Christmas."
She acted like I just called her a filthy name.
It is no mystery to what has occurred--although you may disagree. Christmas is a Christian holiday, so it can be discriminated against. This, despite the radical secularization of the holiday in recent years.
So to those who still celebrate the birth of Christ--Merry Christmas.
And to the ACLU and friends - - "Wonderful Solstice Sparkle Day."
And don't get me started on Kwanzaa....................

Don't Say "Merry Christmas"- -It is not PC
and be careful where you expose a red poisettia to public view.
They are banned from the one of the major municipal buildings in St. Paul, MN
because they are viewed as being "overly religious".
White poinsettia are acceptable.
I'm not making this up...read about this and other great examples of PC "tolerance" during
the Christm....er, the holiday season in the John Leo column over at Jewish World Review.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
To: SkyPilot
Thank the good Lord that I live in a town that celebrates CHRISTMAS! We even have a nativity on the courthouse lawn and pray in Jesus' name. Ah, but we do have a Jewish woman on the city council that is trying to be rid of Jesus. She may have been successful in getting the smoking Nazi's riled up and an ordinance passed preventing smoking in restaurants, but she's getting ready to bite the big one on this. People are FURIOUS and she will be easily voted out the next election. Already lots of people lining up to run against her. Bye bye Mrs. Banks!
Everybody here says MERRY CHRISTMAS! And those that don't celebrate Christmas are smart enough to keep their mouths shut - except this lady.
MERRY CHRISTMAS to all you fabulous FReepers!

Just got back from an early Christmas service at my girlfriend's church (this church is so huge they had to do Christmas service in 8 shifts--2 per day over 4 days playing to a packed house). Lots of Merry Christmas' going around, singing Christmas songs, manger plays...it was enough to send a liberal into a catatonic state, I tell ya!

People are so thin skinned. I have Christian friends who are offended when someone says Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. I have Jewish friends who are offended when someone who does not know they are Jewish says Merry Christmas to them. Why can't people put their attention on more important things than getting offended about such little matters???? Just wish me something nice and I'll be happy no matter what specific words you use.

That oughta get you a broken nose.

At my last job (a brief retail stint at a AWFUL dept. store) I was told I would be fired if I used any other term than Happy Holidays.

My wife used to work in a dress shop of a well-known high-end specialty retailer. They were explicitly told not to say "Merry Christmas." Had to be, "Happy Holidays."

This has long been a Christmas season joy of mine. But rather than get in a fight about it, I find that most clerks or receptionists to whom I say, looking straight in the eye and spoken firmly and with a big smile (very important), "A Merry Christmas to you," invariably stop short amidst their "happy holi-" and smile back. Some even give me a "Merry Christmas" in reply.
It seems to me that they feel liberated by my Christmas greeting.
If anyone has taken offense, they've kept it to themselves. The worst I've gotten is at gas stations which are mostly middle-eastern stocked where I live (DC area), and I get blank stares in return. I suspect the muslims folks are too scared to say anything one way or the other by now.

It isn't Christmas that offends, it is Christ. It was so in the beginning, and it is so now. When he was alive here on earth, he was despised enough to be killed. Why? Because he was threatening to secular leaders. Why is he despised now. Because he is a threat to secular leaders.
The lazy politician, often a believer, allows the outspoken to stampede them into actions for which they must be ashamed in their private moments.
To: SkyPilot
And don't get me started on Kwanzaa................. LOL!
Everytime I've responded to a "Happy Holidays" with a "Merry Christmas" I've been treated to big smiles and I live in Montgomery (We hate Santa!)County, MD.
Maybe, just maybe, IMHO, if you would just drop the "scowl", you might have better results! (hee, hee)
Hang in there and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

,,, it's Christmas Eve already here in New Zealand. One of the smaller left wing leaders (who is actually the deputy Prime Minister) said on NATIONAL RADIO this morning that we're celebrating the birthday of the founder of Christianity. He forgot or couldn't pronounce the name "Jesus". I hope founder of Christianity will see fit to forget Jim Anderton's name in November 2002 when it's election time here.

I do not think anyone should be told what to say when they want to wish someone a holiday greeting. If the person gets offended by the words then they do not understand the reason behind them.
Your wife worked for a PC dress shop--but I guess you already knew that. :-)

How about this, "May our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ grant you and your loved ones a most Blessed holiday," do you think that would offend anyone? What we all must understand that the constitution provides us the right to not be offended.

Some good news.
I have made it a point over the past ten or so years to smile and give a hearty "Merry Christmas" to everybody I know and see during the Christmas season. I got sick of the "Happy Holidays" and "Season's Greetings" crap long ago.
Anyways, I picked up my youngest boy from the government elementary school on Friday and saw the Principal in the hallway keeping the kids in line for the buses as he always does in the afternoons. My son and I wished him a "Merry Christmas" and he returned a nice "Merry Christmas" to us, unashamedly! This was a government school principal! It pleased me greatly and I just wanted to pass this story along in the hopes that maybe things are not as hopeless as they sometimes seem. (I am also glad the ACLU was not present to take the guy to court.)
To: SkyPilot
A bit of history for the PC revisionists: U.S. Congress declares Christmas (December 25) a
national holiday in 1870.
Merry Christmas.

It's just good manners, I think, not PC to try to say a greeting to someone that they will like.
I was in line today at a KMart and the guy ahead of me said "Merry Christmas" to the checker. The checker's name was something like Azthat, and I think he looked South Asian. He had an obvious accent.
I looked at him to see if he was offended, but he wasn't at all. He just smiled and said "Merry Christmas" right back. (Of course, he might have been a Christian for all I know.)
