Deng lived in dangerous and transitional times. Deng was the way he was [in public] because he had to be that way. If he did not choose what he chose, the CCP would have been overthrown in a decade.

Deng took China pretty close to capitalism and helped us in a number of ways to take down the Soviet Union he also had most of the commie hardliners within the party killed. Jiang seems to have been a closet hardliner who survived Deng just like that guy who talks about nuking LA.
