what's with ARthur Andersen? Wasn't their company involved in several major failures in recent hostiry, including Colonial Realty and a few others?

There's also another reason why this won't dim GW Bush, I think. He is being utterly forthright. And what is more, he has a reputation for being forthright. The pygmies in the Democrat Party may try to cast aspersions on him, but it won't stick - trying to make GW Bush into a devious figure in the public imagination is a laughable idea.

The Enron scandal is the third in a string of financial disasters for Andersen. The firm allegedly signed off on financial statements for Sunbeam Corp., which was later sued by the SEC for fraud, and for Waste Management, which later was found to have overstated profits by $1.4 billion. Andersen paid hundreds of millions of dollars to settle those cases and a $7 million government fine.

Could it be that AA is the real reason for Enron employee's losing millions?  They were putting out false financial statements.

This is the root of their Enron fixation. But unfortunately for them, Enron won't save them either. Their fanatical putsch will not only fail, it will backfire. The reason is simple: This President has forged a powerful bond with the people, especially in the wake of September 11. There's a chemistry there, one which Democrats, blinded in their hatred, have yet to fathom. This rapport, this wonderful chemistry, this mighty solidarity transcends race, ethnicity, party, religion, gender; Americans of all walks of life see in this humble man, this down-to-earth, straight-talker from Midland someone whom they can trust, someone they can believe in again. His persona embodies the optimism, the idealism, the cheerful self-assurance and confidence which makes us Americans.

I think the gloves came off last Saturday.  The 'rats have opened up Pandora's box by trying to pin Enron's collapse on GWB.  The real  influence pedaling Enron engaged in with the Clinton administration will all be dredged up for public review.

You are, sir, right on the money (pardon the expression), as usual.

But you didn't go far enough, because the Dems themselves are hip deep in Enron.

This is one can of worms they don't want to open up.

Wonderful article, John,.....my thoughts exactly, but you are more articulate.

If the state of California would pay Enron what it owes to Enron would not this solve the cash shortage problem? Govenor Davis is reported to be arranging "payoff" as we write.

DOesn't the press want to look at themselves wrt Enron? They touted this company as the new leader in that murky tech field...

And shouldn't they ask why the SEC didn't FIRST get after Enron INSTEAD of the WH? Since when does the WH bother in Wall Street's daily affairs? Ridiculous.

'nother great post from JH2 central command.

It is soooooooo comforting to see the dems fail to get traction on any of their Bush-hating spin.

More than that, to see our President actually doing the right thing instead of engaging in lies, politicizing and cover-ups makes me feel good about the White House again. America HAS survived the Clintons (this time) and maybe Dubya will teach everyone a lesson about the character of the character in the oval.

RightRules sits back and entertains himself watching the dems step in it... again.

The hungry democrat hounds have the scent and will be baying in full voice, hoping to make Bush into a one term president.

Unlike the gutless republican politicians, the dems will draw blood. Pubs had eight years of Clinton scandals and came up empty handed and looking foolish.

The Dems desire to take control of the investigation is two-fold. With loud, media-hyped, televised "Investigative Hearings" that focus on Pubs only, the sheeple will not pay attention to the DOJ probe. Also, the Dems want to muddle the evidence and cover their own involvement. Anyone who believes that Bush's tax cuts, which haven't happened yet, are responsible for last year's recession should have no problem ignoring the facts in this Enron bankruptcy. Thanks for the informative articles.

The Bush Administration should appoint Mary Joe White as a special investigator for this.If not her let the Democrats in Congress choose a Special Investigator (maybe Frances Berry) and the Republicans appoint an Investigator to look over the Democrats investigator.Maybe eventually we can make a Billionaire out of every lawyer in this country and the Congress will officially bankrupt this country.Of course by this time all the politicians will have their money in some offshore bank accounts free from prying eyes like their cohorts at ENRON. Nothing ever really changes the working American gets the shaft. If there is truly a God in heaven there will be no room left in hell for anyone after lawyers and politicians are judged.

Agree or disagree with the decision, the refusal is inconsistent with the notion of Mr. Lay having undue influence over this administration. In fact, the bailout denial is the opposite of what one would expect if campaign money and friendship were what they are cracked up to be.

This is the most crucial point in the whole Enron debacle. Not only did Enron fail to get the assistance they asked for, but it is clear that the Bush administration made the right decision when it refused to get involved. The basis for Enron's request was their claim that if the company went bankrupt it would send shock waves through the entire industry.

In fact, it turned out that the exact opposite was true. The fact that the nation's largest energy trading firm went belly-up without even sending a ripple through the energy sector is a clear indication of the wonders of energy deregulation.

So let the Democrats flail away in their smoldering anger; let them scour, let them probe, let them hound, let them stalk, let them rummage, let them shake their fists at this President: They will only hoist themselves on their own petard.

What bothers me the most about the Democrats is that the "Clinton" way still exists. The politics of personal destruction is Tom Daschle's m.o. because it works. For the most part, Americans believe what they are told first. And no matter how hard the truth pursues a lie, it rarely ever catches up.

The Democrats watched this country contort itself into all sorts of strange positions to justify Clinton's lies. Even when confronted by the truth, even when Clinton finally confessed that he lied, most Americans didn't want to hear it. So what the President lied... look at the size of my latest bonus.

We have in office, gutless politicans only concerned with personal power and ambition. Lieberman, McCain, Daschel, Edwards, Kerry, etc. are running for President. They will sell us all down the river to gain the "throne." These men are not worthy of us. But the country cannot and will not see this.

The Democratic smouldering anger is the first voice heard among the people. As long as the Democratic party stays "clintonized", as long as the media remains the public relations firm of the Democratic party, as long as most Americans remain inattentive and inactive in their own government evening will fall in America.

If things aren't changed and changed soon, 101 men and women who only serve themselves and their greed for power will cost us the nation.

"The 'Grey Lady' of yellow journalism....."

You certainly have a flair for words. You sir are too humble to post these columns as stand alone articles, but you should. </effusive praise>.

I think Ashcroft was right to recuse right away, and it will be interesting to see how many Congress critters who will be holding "hearings" will follow his lead. Just knowing who has benefited from all the largesse will certainly make this less politcally radio active IMHO. And as for that grinning deaths head Begala and other dem spinners, it seems so disgusting that they are happy about this. The fact is thousands of people have lost their life savings, and Begala is happy. I would just love for one talking head to ask him why he is so happy, and does he want thousands of people to be hurt just so he can have some political ammunition against the repubs. (of course he does) Those folks are demoghouls.

regards

John, as much as the libagitprop would like to have both the POTUS and his #2staked out for the fire ants, it just isn't going to happen.

First, all the current POTUS and the veep, according to law, must place all their assets in a blind trust for the duration of their term in office. The sheer wording of "blind trust" makes the question "did they know or didn't they know moot.

Secondly, I have never heard of any law which prohibits private citizens, which is what they were, when the fecal matter hit the rotating ventilating device. This Great Republic of ours is based on the principle that anyone can rise to significance within a corporation, regardless if they started out in the Mail Room, or was handpicked for greatness.

Enron was, quite simply, one of the startups which began after the Government de-regulation of electric power distribution. This particular de-regulation began on X42's Watch, and it is quite obivious that the media spin will favor that draft-dogdging traitorous b@st@rd.

Like it or not, the dimocruds are in this up to their @$$hole, and they damn well know it. GWB didn't run the company, Dick Cheney didn't run the country.

It is also illegal to meet with the Executives who handle the day to day affairs of a company. Anyone who wishes to trade a Public company, especially, take up a heavy position in their portfolio would be an idiot not to check that company out with a fine tooth comb.

Who met with who is immaterial. There is nothing wrong with a meeting, nor illegal for a sitting POTUS to invite who he darn well pleases for a face to face in the WH.

Politics are Politics, and Business is Business. My hat is off to Dick Cheney for recusing himself from the investigation, any lawyer or judge would be honor bound to to the same thing. It is impossible to represent a party in adversarial relations if one has had prior association with the party...heck, that's Law 101 stuff.

IF someone at Enron destroyed records, I am sure neither the POTUS or VPOTUS was physically present, nor gave the order. The fools who ran the company into the ground did.

If this case had involved a Dumbocrat such as X42, the media would be kissing his @$$ in a coverup. CBS news, the source of this thread is remarkably candid in their evaluation of the theme which reads in part:

...Their Enron obsession is understandable, of course: Bush's rock-solid popularity is holding steady, even as their party wallows in disarray and dysfunction. On the other hand, one thing does unite the beltway Democrats like nothing eles: Hate. Their shared hatred of Bush. It's ugly, it's spiteful, it's vile. And it's unseemly. For Bush-haters, it's not enough to disagree with the President: Policy differences must be criminalized.
