ONE DOWN: Former Congressman charged with fraud, shackled with monitoring bracelet
ABC NEWS ^ | 1/24/02 | AP

PHILADELPHIA (AP) A former congressman charged with bilking banks and clients out of more than $10 million will remain confined to his home, a judge ruled Thursday in rejecting a motion to have him jailed.

However, U.S. District Judge Stewart Dalzell said Edward M. Mezvinsky will now have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and can leave home only to visit his doctor, lawyer or church.

The judge also barred Mezvinsky from depositing any checks other than his Social Security check.

The 64-year-old former Iowa congressman faces 66 counts of fraud and related charges for allegedly fleecing banks, clients and relatives including his elderly mother-in-law out of $10.4 million.

Prosecutors had wanted Mezvinsky jailed, saying he has continued his attempts to swindle people, including trying to deposit a fake check for $480,000.

Mezvinsky's lawyer, Thomas Bergstrom, said his client is mentally ill, and dealing with him is essentially "advanced child care."

Once again, no party mentioned = DemocRAT.

I think we should start keeping a log of these articles and send them off to someone like Bernard Goldberg for his next book.

He must have been a DemocRAT, since the news article didn't mention his party affiliation. Had he been a Republican, the story would have started off with "Republican Congressman . . . "

Gotta love the media. Nowhere in this article does the word "Democratic" appear. Think they'd say if he was a Republican?

Since they didn't mention a political affiliation in the headline or with bold print in the article, I'm gonna take a stab at it. I'll go with democrat.

Yes, I think so. He is married to Democrat Margorie Margoles-Mesvinsky. I think I got her name right. She was defeated after she supported Clinton's tax hike.

Yep, a dim. He was a congresscritter from Iowa, I believe. His wife, Marjorie Margoles (sp) Menzvinsky was a one term critter from PA who lost her seat after voting for clinton's tax increase. After she cast the final decisive vote, the pubbies called out to her "Bye Bye Marjorie".

Mezvinsky served as a United States Congressman from Iowa from January 1973 to January 1977. He was the United States representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights from 1977 to 1979. He served as chairman of the Pennsylvania State Democratic Committee from 1981 to 1986, and was the Democratic candidate in an unsuccessful race for Pennsylvania Attorney General in 1988. His wife, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, served as a United States Congresswoman from Pennsylvania from January 1993 to January 1995. She is not charged in this matter with any criminal wrongdoing.

That wasn't so hard now why couldn't the real reporters find this information ?

No mention of party affiliation. Must be a 'Crap.

Thats funny because as I read through the article I kept perusing for mention of his party affiliation and KNEW that I would never see the word "democrat" in it.
