I would say you are right about 99% of the overweight people out there. But I have no doubt that there is a small portion of those that are overweight that it is indeed genetic.
I have a condition that is likely genetic that can contribute to being overweight: hypothyroidism. It screws up and slows down metabolism so more food is converted to fat than energy, resulting in increased weight gain and general lethargy (so excercise is a very difficult task).
Of course in the case of hypothyroidism there is treatment in the form of thyroid horomone suppliments which should counteract those effects. As such I attribute most of my recent weight gain to a change in lifestyle (going from a fast-paced job where I moved around a lot to a desk job), poor eating habits and lack of excercise. In response to my increased weight (I'm not overweight yet, but I'm pushing it) I am cutting down on fatty foods and trying to excercise regularly. Apparently for some people it's easier just to whine.
