Arab youth were urged to launch a vast uprising against Israeli atrocities in Palestine and restore the dignity of the Arab nation at the opening of the Third Arab Youth Gathering organised by the Department of Culture and Information under the banner: The youth and the Arab Cause yesterday.

Addressing delegations of young men from 15 Arab countries, Abdullah Al Owais, Director General of the department, stressed that young people in the Arab world can play an integral role in fostering the Palestinian uprising and destroying Israeli arrogance that disrespects international agreements.

He observed that the Arab world at present faces one of its toughest periods as Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon continues to massacre innocent Palestinian civilians. He added: "We were all deeply struck by the Israeli army's recent invasion of Palestinian refugee camps, which killed 25 Palestinians and left 280 injured."

As young people, he added, "your role towards the Palestinian cause is greater now that ever to help bring an end to this bloodshed."

Al Owais urged the delegations to turn their gathering into a useful forum of ideas and proposals that can be submitted to the leaders of the Arab countries to review and discuss in their next summit.

Rashid Al Shamsi, chairman of the UAE delegation, said: "The Palestinian cause is the main concern of all Arabs. The current events are a clear evidence of the enemy's aggression on the Arab land and no matter how far they go, their attempts are doomed to fail."

He welcomed the delegations to the meeting, which he believed will enable them to express their opinions about the situation in the Occupied Territories and their role in supporting their Palestinian brethren in their just struggle for freedom.

Last night, the delegations attended a play entitled Martyrdom at Al Aqsa Gates staged at the Cultural Palace.

The week-long event is being held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

Five young men are represented in this gathering from each country and they had been selected on the basis of distinction in cultural areas.

The first meeting, held in 1998, tackled the issue of youth and the environment and the second, held in 2000 focused on the impact of globalisation on youth.

The delegations are expected to meet the Sharjah Ruler today in his office.

Prominent Palestinian intellectual, Dr Ahmed Sidqi Al Dajani, will give a lecture this evening at Al Qasba auditorium on the role of Arabs towards supporting the Palestinian cause.

On Monday, the delegations will tour the University City, Sharjah main library and the Science Museum. In the evening, they will attend a musical concert at the Cultural Palace.

On Tuesday, they will visit the Arts Museum and old Sharjah. Then they will attend a poetry evening on Palestine hosted by the Arab Cultural Club.

On Wednesday, they will visit Al Muntada Al Islami and the Archaeological Museum, and on Thursday they will tour Sharjah.
