We Were Soldiers, Not Baby Killers

Sometime after the 1983 liberation of Grenada, Ronald Reagan observed that one of the important achievements of the operation was that it helped get America over Vietnam. No longer was every military campaign destined to be another lost, aimless war. This weekend, Hollywood finally caught up to the Gipper. No longer is every movie about Vietnam destined to portray the war as aimless and immoral.

There are a lot of people who can't accept that the US was the good guy in Vietnam

They are all members of the CPUSA it its various various life forms that it took on starting in the 30's.

What do you think Happy Jack Kennedy meant when he said in his inagural speech, "Let the word go forth that America will pay any price..."? Don't believe the B.S. that he was going to pull the US out of Vietnam; not after he condoned the assassination of Diem and his brother. Besides the Dems were still under fire for losing China.

I don't think she said "atheist", I think she said "Methodist". Can anyone confirm?

I heard Methodist.

" She wants to be an atheist, "like mommy.""

Hmmm, the line I heard was "I want to be a Methodist, like Mommy".

"Friendly fire" is possibly the hardest fire to take, which is probably why "We Were Soldiers" isn't finding very many good reviews and will likely be shunned by the California set.

At Rottentomatoes.com, We Were Soldiers garners 64% positive ratings from movie reviewers around the country, the only movie in the top five this week to have more than 60% positive reviews.

The film critic in our very own San Jose Mercury News' was decidedly un-clever & vicious in his review of the film - he said that(to paraphrase) the film was crappy, what would you expect given Gibson's conservative politics.

But the inbred leftwing bed wetters that write for that rag are provincial lot. I take their thumbs down as the single best reason to go see the film.

"audience ratings"

I watched a review show (I forget the name)where they rate movies based upon exit polls where viewers "recommend" (or not.....)the movie they just watched.

this particular show polled 98% recommending WWS. I would do the same. There was lots of ice dropped here (DFW)and the showing I was at was light. I cannot imagine what word of mouth will do for this flick.

IT'S AWESOME, I.M.O. - GO OUT AND SUPPORT MEL's effort folks. I'm going back this weekend.

Great book, good movie, all right review posted. CAS was done all through WWII, Korea, and any Marine can tell you that it was started by AA Cunningham during one of the many fights by Marines in South America. The LtCol was a warrior.

...will likely be shunned by the California set.

This gets old. People who know nothing of California like to slam it based on tired myths. There a lot of more liberal places in this country than California.

Anybody remember the PRVN propoganda about no PAV troops being in the South ?

And the parroting of that line by the anti-war movement in this country

You're the first FReeper I've heard of who remembers the Skiing.

It turned even more surreal about 24 hours later when I got off of a flight in Detroit in sub-freezing conditions, still dressed only in khakis and a light flight jacket and thinking, what the he!! was that all about?

Welcome home, js.

There a lot of more liberal places in this country than California.

That's true for some places like Boulder, CO and a few other hot spots.

But down here in Los Angeles, I thought I was having a stroke when I saw a primary advert.
on TV for one of the Democrats running for one of the lesser state offices.
He was bragging about all the experience he had from working in the Carter Administration.
Even Bill Clinton treated Carter like he was kryptonite...part of the reason he got elected.

I am about 1/2 way through the book. We are going to the movie next week.

Fred - have you met SFC (ret) Savage on one of his trips up here? He will be back sometime this month. We are working on the scenarios for the IBCT test coming up. He is the primary scenario developer for it. Can't think of anyone more qualified for it.

I believe you are correct. I'm taking more friends and family this weekend to see it, this will be my third time. I'll pay more attention to that scene and let you know.
