California: Davis says he won't support new, softer child-care bill

The new measure lessens need for reporting old criminal convictions.

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Gray Davis is vowing to veto a child-care bill that had broad support in the Legislature because it would allow parents to know the criminal backgrounds of caregivers only with violent, recent or extensive histories of crime.

Davis was doing nothing until the OC Register did a series of articles on this and now he is all over it, trying to get just the right bill!

Where was he before the Register exposed the problems by writing their articles ?
