From the http://www.nasbe.org website

2002 Annual Conference
October 10-12, 2002
Westin Horton Plaza Hotel
San Diego, California

"Friday, Oct 11th; 12:30 - 2:00 pm Policy Leader of the Year luncheon Sponsored by ETS K-12 Assessment"

The award was given out yesterday, so no protests were planned. If FReepers had known that Joe Greed was going to be in San Diego to accept the award, we could have delivered an appropriate response to the coronation of king davis.

A search of both sites indicate that neither NASBE.org, or http://www.ETS.org, who sponsored the award, have posted anything up on their website regarding the press release. Even a marketing dummy like me knows that you post press releases up on your website as soon as approved by management. It is close to rule #1 in how to manage the media, and provide for effective publicity for the group. We will need to see if the text of the press release shows up over the next week.

So far, this looks like a bogus award given to Joe Greed:

1). Since the convention was held in San Diego,

2). As payback to Joe for his altruistic service to all the California chillun,

3). Payback for a generous campaign contribution. Oh, wait, they give and he takes. Joe Greed must have spent some money with the Testing Service, or otherwise rewritten the rules so that they can bolk the state for more bogus testing.

The following is directly from the NASBE website:

http://www.nasbe.org/Front_Page/Chairshead.html

"CALIFORNIA'S HIGH STAKES TEST UNDER REVIEW FOLLOWING DISAPPOINTING RESULTS. More than 50% of students taking the California high school exit exam last spring failed one or more sections of the test. Under current law, students will have to retake and pass the test in order to receive a high school diploma. Although students will have options for remediation before retaking the test, the disappointing test results have prompted some state education leaders to raise the possibility of postponing the enforcement of the requirements. State Board of Education President, Reed Hastings, indicated that the Board would be watching the issue closely, although there would be no immediate action by the Board."

Good to know that their press releases and headline service of Oct 4th was so in tune with this award, and that Joe Greed was the most deserving of all the policy leaders in America.

Memo to NASBE: don't issue press releases dissing the very people whom you will soon provide awards to.

Sheesh.
